MUST NOT REMOVE HAND FROM MOTOR.
-.; ♦ FIRST COURT CASE UNDER REGULATIONS. A motorist, whether driving a car or riding a motorcycle, must not take even one hand from Ihe steering equipment, unless it to be for a momentary purpose. The first ease under the new regulations came before the Magistrate's Court at Christchurch yesterday when Frank Fazackerley: was charged with removing his hands from the handlebars- of a motor-cycle white in motion. * • Police evidence was that defendant was riding at a speed of about thirty miles an hour. 5 Defenderit:: My speed was abxmt twenty-five miles an hour. I took my hands off the handlebars to buttdri-up my overcoat. The pockets were full of gear, and my hands.were not off the bars for more than three hundred vards. The Magistrate: Couldn't you have stopped your machine?" "Yes, I did that later on," replied defendant. The Magistrate: This is the first case brought before me under the new regulations, and no doubt it will act as a warning to motorists, whether riders or drivers. The regulations state that Hot even one hand must be remove! from the steering control, except for a momentary purpose. In this case botha hands were removed, and three hundred yards could not be considered \ a momentary purpose. Defendant was convicted and discharged. - ' , ; -
