SHANNON v. .WERAROA.

So far the two matches played i* Shannon for the Nash Cup have been farcical. On the previous Saturday Wanderers arrived over half-arf-hour late, with a scratch team, and again on Saturday Weraroa were half-an-hofr late, in putting in an appearance, 5 arriving Avith only eleven players, making up .their team with one.Miranui and three Shannon juniors. In the first spell Shannon kept Weraroa ou the;defeusive practically throughout, and at half-time were leading by 10 to 3. On resuming Shannon appeared content ta hold their lead, by playing, a defensive game. Although. Weraroa made repeated attempts to get over, Shannon’s'defence held until just on the call, of time, when* Lankshear crossed. ; Weraroa kicked off and early in the piece Broughton, after beating several men, reached, the full-back (Marsh) and, short-punting,, beat the latter for the ball and; scored. Warren failed with the ;kiek. \Ferar.oa 3, Shannon nil. j 1 .The Reds; tiien launched an attack and carried/play , near Weraroa’s 25. line; but their opponents were able: to .hold, them; The ball travelled up and down from the 25 line to centre several .times at,a fast rate, but from a hard kick by a Shannon forward the ball went over the dead line. Play hovered around midfield for some time until McKenzie set going a fine passing movemerit among his backs, a forward pass spoiling the effort when near the line. Whyte .from a mark soon after bad ari unsuccessful shot at goal. Thii wa* followed by Carter opening up to Roberts and. Robbie, the latter being collared near .the line. The Rods then came with a forward rush, Avhich ended'in a scramble near the line, from which Williams beat an opponent and touched doAVn. Hirst converted. Shannon" 5,' Weraroa ,3. The Reds in their eagerness to in-, crease their; lead, were penalised three times in quick succession for off-side play. In Weraroa’s 25 Walls essayed to pot a 'gdal."/’ft aVus Y good attempt, the ball going judt’ outside the upright. The Red 3 continued to attack and *K,. Dalzell got the ball and after beating several men, passed to Satherley) who rail over to score under the posts. Hirst was again successful Avith the the spell ending Shannon 10, Weraroa 3.

The second half was uninteresting. Tie Reds playing a defensive game. Weraroa made determined efforts to score, but lacking combination these efforts went unrewarded. At times the game; became rough, several bouts passing unnoticed. Towards the end of the spell play travelled up and down the field, Walls eventually drop-kicking a splendid goal from a serum on Weraroa’s 25 line. Weraroa then attacked the Reds’ line, and on the call of time Lankshear, a Shannon junior, who had been playing well all day, crossed Shannonline.' His club-mate, Mason, was entrusted with the kick, but failed to convert. Time was then ctolled, with Shannon 14, Weraroa 6. Mr E, Sevan had charge of the game. THIRD GRADE. A fair attendance of spectators visited the Foxton racecourse on Saturday afternoon to watch the mateh between Wanderers and Foxton thirds. The game waa very tam'e, the good play being very spasmodic. Several times Foxton were on the verge of scoring when they were penalised for infringements. During the game Wanderers’ forwards managed to get the ball out and cross the line. The kiek at goal was successful.—Levin 5, Foxton nil. HIGH SCHOOLS. Levin High School defeated Foxton on Saturday morning by 11 points to 1(1. The teams were pretty evenly matched. The backs on both sides put in some very good work, especially in the second half.
