HOROWHENUA COUNTY.

JULY MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held in the County Chambers, Levin, on Saturday, there being present: Mr G. A. Monk (chairman), Crs Barber, Whyte, Ryder, Bryant, Kilsby, McLeavey, Catley and Jensen, Mr F. H. Hudson (County Clerk) and Mr J. T. M. Brewster (County Engineer). RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT. The District Engineer forwarded a copy of the circular sent to local bodies outlining the terms and conditions on which .the Government was prepared to grant subsidies to local bodies on works for the relief of unemployment. The Chairman moved that the letter be received. He stated that the Council did not propose to raise a loan for unemployment relief. They were anxious, however, to push on with some of the Main Highways work, and when this was possible he thought that it would afford all the relief required in this district.

The motion was carried. OPIKI SCHOOL BEQUESTS.'

Mr A. E. White, secretary of the Opiki School Committee, wrote stating that on June 28th the new school at Opiki (in the Eangiotu district) had been officially opened; and asking if the Council would erect warning signposts for motorists. He also asked if the Council could see their way clear to give the committee a grant. The provision of the school was the result of long continued agitation, and it was only by the good work of Mr Hugh Akers that it was now an accomplished fact. Mr Akers had donated the land and, to get the school quickly, had also paid £l5O towards the bdilding. The committee now wished to have the grounds put in order, and for that purpose required funds. On the motion of the Chairman, it was decided to instruct'the Engineer to erect the- signs asked for; and to inform the Committee that the Council regret that they are unable to make a grant in respect of the grounds. OLD MANAWATU BEIDGE. Notification was received that the Public Works Department had accepted the tender of Mr U. J. Peacocke, at £550, for the dismantling of the old Shannon bridge over the Manawatu KAEA DETOUE ROAD. The District Engineer wrote informing the Council that the Highways Board agreed to the payment of a £1 for £1 subsidy up to a'total expenditure of £l3O, towards the cost of maintenance of the . detour road in connection with the erection of the Kara Stream bridge on the Main Highway near Shannon. The ' maintenance was to be paid from the date the old bridge was dismantled until one week after the expiry date of the contract. POBOUTAWHAO SCHOOL CULVERT Mr S. J. Jackson, chairman of the Poroutawlioa School. Committee, wrote asking if the. Council would consider shifting the culvert'* across the main road in front of.,*'the Poroutawhao School. The culvert was about two chains too far to the north, and did not drain the water that lay in a stagnant poo] during the summer months, in front of the school, to the detri ment of" the health of the children. Th writer had approached the forme. County Engineer, who had promised t< have the matter attended to.

The application was referred to the Councillors for the riding and the En gineer, with power to act. APPLICATION FOE WATER. Mr P. 11. Harper wrote on behalf ' oi Mr Janies Frew, who stated that , i farm property which he recently pur chased from the trustees of the esta-t. of the late E. B. Corby, at Muhunoi West, was not adequately supplied witi water. Mr Frew stated that there wa a water trough on the property, t. which water was pumped by means ; o: a ram from a water-race on an adjoining property, but this trough supplied opl; one paddock and was insufficient fo the requirements of his stock* Tin writer understood that the existing Ava ter supply was under the control o the Council, and Mr Frew wished tknow whether the Council would b prepared to allow him to extend, tlipresent supply of water to a secom trough to be erected by him on tit property. The . matter was referred to Cr. Me Leavey and the Engineer, with powe to act. lIOKIO BEACH ROAD. A communication was received from the Levin Borough Council agreeing t( the County Council taking over the re sponsibility for the maintenance of the whole length of the Levin-Hokio High way, the Borough contributing one-fifth of Hie cost of maintaining the first 39 chains from No. 1 Highway. PETROL PUMP. The Texas Co. (Aiist.). Ltd., wrote asking for a permit to instal a petrol pump’and tank on the property occm pied by Mr W. G. Benning at Ohau. The Engineer reported that- he had inspected the locality, and the installation would'not, be detrimental to the traffic. On the motion of Cr. McLeavey, the application was .granted, subject to the conditions usual in such cases,

QUEEN STREET HIGHWAY. The Public Works Department for : warded- copies of proclamations' taking and setting apart land at the corner of Queen Street and Arapaepae Road for the purposes of the Main Highway, the object being to improve the curve. The Council’s share of the payment to the Education Department, owner of the land, was £7 10s, and this was passed for payment. LAWLOR’S ROAD. Messrs Park and-Adams noticed the Council that the proclamation taking land for the purposes of Lawlor’s Road had been duly registered against .tjfs certificates of title, . It was. decided to decline the request in view of the possibility of coming to an arrangement with the Highways 7Board whereby? work will be resumed " on the Main Highways. " WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The report of. the Works Committee, A as follows, wag- 1 adopted:— ~ ■ Road Names.—That the road at present known as Mark’s Road ‘be called 1 Kukutauaki Road, and that the road - leading to the property of Messrs Short ; 7 Bros., off the Koputaroa-Heatherlea ;’i Road, be called Kohitane Road. ] Engineer’s Report)—That the Engineer’s' report be adopted, and that ' the machinery required for the depot be purchased in accordance with the particulars submitted. ' \ McLeavey Road Railway Crossing.— Your Committee are unable to make ) any recommendation in respect to this matter. „• " The machinery to be purchased for ■) the depot consists of a 6ft lathe and fittings, a drilling machine and fittings, : a grinding machine, a set’of adjust- ’ able reamers, shafting, pulleys, motor and wiring. The total cost is set down 1 at £203 17s. , The dangerous nature of the MiiLeavey Road crossing (the scene of a ■ ; double fatality in February) was ) pointed out to the Council, in April, , by the Ohau branch of the Farmers' Union, which urged the Council to ask the Railway Department to assist in the erection of an overhead bridge.
