NASH CUP.
SHANNON v. WANDERERS,
The first of the series of games for the Nash Cup Was played on the Shan non. Domain on Saturday afternoon, when Shannon met and soundly defeated Wanderers. The game was oyer half an hour late in commencing owing to the late arrival of Wanderers,_ who 1 had experienced difficulty in getting a team together. They eventually fielded a weak side, Avhieh included junior and third grade players, as well as one or two players who had not donned a jersey, for some time. Shannon also did not have their full strength, having to fall back on Wliiti, a third grade • player, as full -back. Throughout, the first spell the Blacks were on the defensive and failed to reach the Reds 25, the latter scoring 22 points to nil. In the second half Wanderers did bettor and' in the early part they were doing the attacking, but with the ox- , ccption of a smart try scored bj Ryder, who had gone up from full-back to five-eighths, the defence of the Reds kept them in check. The game a. times Ayas fast, and willing, and, from the spectators’ point of view, interesting. On the day the Reds were superior in all departments, their final score being 32 points to 3. Shannon kicked off against the sun and following a free kick for forward play they dribbled through, Mjoodie scoring. -Whyte failed with the kick. Shannon 3, Wanderers nil. Almost immediately after, from a free kick just inside the half-way line Whyte kicked a beautiful goal. Shau--9* non'6, Wanderers 0. A dribbling rush led by Satlierley was saved by .Ryder picking up and kicking out to the line. From the line i out the Reds got the ball and sent it out among the backs, a. good passing movement bejing spoilt by Robbie knocking on the pass. A delay was '.caused at this juncture, owing.' to the ball being kicked up into a tree, no extra ball being available. After the ball had been in play a short time ii came out to ...Roberts from a scrum and he attempted to drop-kick a goal, but the ball failed to rise, much to tlu amusement of the spectators. The Red backs were now pressing the Blacks with passing movements, in one of which the ball travelled along the whole line Walls finally being pushed .out at the corner fiagj. From a line out, Carter, a new player who was filling the role of' five-eighth, and playing a good game, essayed a pot at‘goal, the ball appearing to go over, but the referee disallowed it. With the Blacks still defending, Carter short punted, and Ryder failing to hold the ball, Carter snapped it up and scored under tin posts. Whyte failed to further increase the score—Shannon 9, Wanderers nil. From the kick out Moodie kiekee 5 back to Blacks 25, where Carter again attempted to pot a goal. The Red kept up the attack and from a fivi yards scrum Reds got the ball and Marsh scored. Carter missed with the kick. Shannon 12, Wanderers nil. Headed by. Fitzgerald the Reds again reached Black territory, where the former were;penalised. They came back ..again and from a scramble on the line for the ball N. Dalzell touched down Hurst converted. Shannon 17, Wanderers nil. Following the kick-out, the Black!; were awarded a free kick, Tatana having an unsuccessful shot at goal from just outside the Reds’ 25. The Red • carried play down the field again and • from a five yards’ scrum Walls got tin ball and sent it on to McKenzie, wingot over. Hirst again converted. Tlu spell ended Shannon 22, Wanderer! nib
On resuming tho Blacks opened u; by kicking into Reds’ territory, and Whiti, the full back, failing to kick clear the Blacks followed up, but kicking too hard, the ball went over the ' line and was declared “dead.” The ■ Blacks continued to attack, during which Heremaia made a fine run, beating several men, finally to be collared by Walls. At last their effort was rewarded by Ryder, working His" way ■ through to register their first and onlVj score. Tatana took the kick, but failed 1 to add the extra points. Shannon 22, Wanderers 3. The Blacks launched another attack, in which Heremaia was again responsible for some good work, mark by Whyte giving relief. For some time/ play hovered around the half way line, where from a scramble Robbie got the, . ball and raced down the field, and on reaching the full-back, passed to Marsh who' scored, converting his own ' try. Shannon ro 27, Wanderers 3.
Quickly following McKenzie made .a great opening, to score, but a forward pass . called a halt. The game now became fast, neither side letting up, the ball travelling up and down the field, until a free kick to the Reds saw Hirst have a shot at goal, but the ball went wide. Robbie then carried play to Black territory,. where they made a vigorous attack on the latter’s line and after a series of scrums Satherley event-
ually dived across, Hirst converting. Time was then called with the score —Shannon 32, Wanderers 3. Mr Sevan had charge of the game.
JUNIORS. MIRANUI v. SHANNON. This game was played on the Miianui grounds on Saturday and ended in a victory for Miranui by six points to three. The game opened with Miranui on the attack and from a series of scrums they kept Shannon on the defensive for some time. Finally Birchall Avas collared in a passing movement-, and through hanging on to the ball, a free kick awarded to Miranui in front of the goal -posts enabled Picard to open Miranui’s account- Later from a scramble near midfield McEwen secured the ball, making a fine dash down the line, to transfer to Croon, who scored near the corner. Picard failed to add the extra points. Shannon then took up the offensive and kept Miranui inside the latter’s 25, Holden being, unlucky in not scoring through mulling the ball. A little later he made another unsuccessful attempt to pot a goal, th<s ball going under the bar,. Half time was called with Shannon still, attacking. On resuming, Shannon continued the attack, but were showing signs of tiring. Miranui then launched an offensive, penning the Reds in their own 25. Play at this stage was uninteresting, being practically a struggle between the two packs. Just before call of time a passing rush-by the-Miranui backs broke down, and the Holden Bros burst, through with the ball at their toe. A race in which Mabey, the full-back, was beaten, ended in B. Holden scoring at the corner. Mason failed to convert. The outstanding players oh the day among the Miranui backs were" -Picard, Mabey and McEwen. and in the forwards Cootes and Polglase. The most conspicuous, in the 'Shannon team were Lankshear and Pratt- (forwards) and Holden Bros and Mason among the backs. s NASH CUP FIXTURES.
