Shannon News FRIDAY, JULY 13, 1928.

Leave of absence which was granted to Cr. Gunning, through illness, some time ago, was further extended by the Shannon Borough Council at their meeting on Tuesday evening.

The many friends of Mr Bert Spencer will be sorry to learn that he was taken seriously ill in Palmerston North on Monday and is now an inmate of the Hospital. His condition is such that it is causing his relatives grave anxiety.

Another of the series of croquet afternoons was given by Mrs Roach at 'her residence yesterday. A large number of members and friends were present and a euchre tournament afforded a pleasant meaii3 of making the gathering a success. Mrs Snelling, of Mangaore, was the successful recipient of the first prize and Mrß Retter the consolation prize;

Motorists passing through Shannon contend that bad language and calling the Horowhenua County Council uncomplimentary names is excusable when they have to pass through the quagmire that at present exists at the Kara bridge on, the main north road. Two or three feet of clay on a bad bend in the road is certainly not pleasant for motoring, particularly after a shower of rain. In fact, it is extremely dangerous. On Tuesday morning several cars were stuck in the quagmire, with the result that complaints were made to the Shannon Borough Council, these wrathful motori&ts being under the impression that the road was under the jurisdiction of the Council. The matter came before the Council at their meeting on Tuesday evening, when they communicated by telephone with Mr Barber, the member for the riding, who promised to have the trouble rectified in the morning.

The card party held last evening in aid of funds for the Plunket Society was well attended and a most enjoyable time was spent by those present. In the 500 tourney (ladies' section) Mrs Terry was awarded the first prize which had been donated by Mrs Lind. The gents' prize, a bag of coal, was won by Mr J. Aim, who generously ordered it to be left at the Council office, to be given to some one in need. Mrs Taylor and Mr B. Wilkinson received the. consolation prizes. In the cribbage, the prizes were won by" Mrs Hensmann and Mrs A. Mason, the consolation prizes going to Mrs A. T.White and Mr Hensman. At the request of those present it was decided to hold the tourneys fortnightly, instead of monthly as at first intended. Mr G. Hook has kindly donated a 401 b box of apples for the next night as a ladies' prize for 500. A -251 b bag of flour will be given for the men's prize.

Eecords! Eecords! Great, reduction in prices for a fortnight only. Come and choose.—At Baxter's (late J. V. Burns), Where the New Books Are.*

What remains of the old Shannon traffic bridge over the Manawatu River is to be demolished. At Tuesday's meeting of the Manawatu County Council the district engineer of the Public Works Department, advised that the tender of Mr H. J. Peaeocke, of Shannon for dismantling the structure had been accepted. The price of the work is £550.

The poliey followed by the Central Hawkes Bay Electrie Power Board with regard fo country reticulation is to require a guarantee of £6O per mile per annum for the first five years' of supply before extensions are undertaken. At the last meeting of the Board two pastoralists made application for extensions in respect of which they forwarded guarantees of £3OO and £550 per annum respectively. For private residences these guarantees will take siome beating.

"It is marvellous what some people will do," declared the chairman of the Hawera School Committee during a discussion as to the safe stewardship of school property. "The other night a load of shingle on the side of a eounty road ready for commencement of a job next morning was not all there when the men arrived. A lorry had been pulled up in the dark and the shingle shovelled and carted away. Several times similar occurrences have been known."
