LEVIN PITTING.

The monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Levin was held on Thursday, before Mr J. N, Miller, S.M. MAINTENANCE CASES. '.'"■ The Education Department _.proceed- '■ ed against Charles William Norman for the maintenance of his three children. Constable Bagrie stated that, since the committal of the children to the Superintendent of Child Welfare, the defendant .had not paid anything for i their maintenance. Norman was living apart from his wife, but she had never asked for maintenance for herThe defendant gave evidence, staging that he was earning 25s a week and .M 3 keep as a farm and was paying■ charges amounting to 7s a weeK On a cottage belonging to his mothei, which contained his belongings Theie was a possibility of his wife returning to him and ho wished toliave a home ready for her. .If he did not pay the charges on the house, he would lose it, •he had,just paid £ls to save it from being sold. When the children wore with him he was able to maintain them, because he had more remunerative work;' but such employment was now difficult to obtain. • ; The Magistrate said that after the winter the defendant should have no difficulty in securing another position. The maintenance of his children was the first call on his money; the rent of the house was a secondary matter. In the meantime he would have to pay 5s a week for each of the children, and this amount would be increased whe.i he was earning more money. An order for maintenance was made accordingly. ', ,-,,- In the Case in which Florence Elizabeth Jones applied for maintenance from James William Liverpool Jones, Mr Adams made application for the evidence of the husband to be heard ' at Morrinsville; the defendant was in a very poor state of health and .unable to follow his employment. _ A medical certificate was received; and the applicttic-n was granted, the hearing of the case being -adjourn ea to August 16th at Levin. The Public Trustee, as administrator of the estate of Ottavia Fosella, sued George Neville Newman for rent and possession of the house occupied by the defendant. In response to the summons the defendant's wife appeared and stated that they were not at present in a, position to pay the rent and would have difficulty in securing another house on account of haying a family of five children. The Magistrate pointed out that the Public I Trustee had a duty to carry out; he was the administrator of an estate, the'parties in which might be dependent on the rent. Judgment was given for £23 2s lOd rent, and for possession of the house within 14 days; with costs £3 Is. JUDGMENT SUMMONSES. Orders on judgment summonses were made as follows: — J. Bak to pay Atkins Bros. £ls 7s 5d at the rate of £1 per month, and so lienor's fee £1 Is; in default 15 days' imprisonment. A. Johnson to pay Aitehiaon' and Son £9 6s 5d forthwith, and solicitor's ,fe->. 15s 6d; in default nine days. Archibald Reid to pay William James McDonald £9 13s 6d'forthwith, and solicitor's*fee las 6d; in default nine days.
