HOROWHENUA RETAIN BEBBINGTON SHIELD.

Local Team’s Fine Showing. RANGITIKEI FAIL TO SCORE.

The holders (Horowhenua) never looked like losing possession of the Bebbington Shield at Foxton on Saturday. Rangitikei were outclassed both in the forward and back divisions. The game was a fast one, with Horowhenua doing most of the attacking, though Rangitikei retaliated occasionally, only to be let down by bad passing. Mr Scott, of 'Wellington, controlled the game, and the teams lined out as follows: —

Rangitikei (green): Higgins, J. Em, G. Hartley, X Potaka, B. Cameron, G.’ Hanley, B. Johnson,, J. Timmins, 11. Lumsden, C. Ellery, J. Adams, S. Gibbs, Tohu, D. Stevens, J. Walker. Horowhenua (red and black): N. Ryder, H. Taylor, W. Westwood, M. Roberts, 11. Warren, T. Parata, M. Hakaraia, D. McDonald, W. Hoodie, A. Ward, D. Tatana,. R~ Satherley, N t MeDonell, L. Dalzell. ■ Greens kicked off and went to the attack, but Taylor cleared well to touch in greens’ twenty-five. Reds pressed hard and good work by Tatana, Westwood, Taylor, Roberts and Halcaria compelled greens to force. Dalzell and Hakaraia dribbling up compelled greens to force again. Greens attacked, but Westwood intercepted a pass and cleared. The ball was carried up to greens’ twenty-live and Eru missed badly. In attempting to clear, the greens cross-kicked, but Tatana , obtained and fell over, to open reds’ account. Taylor missed with a good kick. —Horowhenua 3. Rangitikei nil. Greens started to attack again but Ryder took the ball well and cleared to touch. A further attack was stopped by Taylor. Shortly -afterwards a free kick for off-side play allowed Tatana to put an excellent kick into greens’ twenty-five. The forwards, following up well, compelled greens to force. Some good work was noticeable on the part of Westwood. Eventually •Roberts tried to get away, but was well collared. Westwood obtained and passing to Taylor, ran round and took’ Taylor’s pass, to score. —Taylor missed the kick. Horowhenua 6, Ra'ngitikei nil. Some good work by Cameron, Hartley and Potaka was stopped by Hoodie and Roberts, who let Westwood ,go away again. From a scramble in front of their goal, greens were awarded a free kick. A good kick by Roberts caught Higgins napping, and the ball ran to touch in greens’ twenty-five. From the line-out, Taylor cut in to score. The kick failed .again.—Horo whenua 9, Rangitikei nil. Up to half-time no further points were added. Hartley, Potaka Eru and Gibbs played well for Rangitikei. whilst Parata (W. and T.) Dalzell, Taylor, Westwood and Ryder Were noticeable for reds. After the interval the reds attacked with t’enpwcd vigour. Gibbs, who was hurt in the hist spell retired and R Louvie took His plage. Dalzell was unfortunate in first failing to score. A free kick to greens for scrum infringe ment saw the ball go to Roberts, .who made a groat dash for the line, only to be collared. Greens were awarded two free kicks in succession, enabling them to clear, but the red forwards attacked well, Ward being prominent,. Hakaraia eventually obtained and passed to Roberts who scored, the kick going wild. —Horowhenua 12, Rangiti kei nil.

Shortjl.y afterwards, good work by Taylor, and McDonell en abled T. Rarata to s,c t or,e between tin posts, 15. McDonald conv, eyeing,— ]Eoro vvhdnua 17, Rangitikei nil. Greens made a hard attack and look cd like scoring, but a wild pass enabled T. Parata to dribble well up the field Westwood attempted to get through The ball travelled down the forward: and the three-quarter line to Robert.:who tried to dive over but knocked. ou when collared. A free kick shortl. after enabled Taylor to add .the find score,—Horowhenua 20, Rangitikei nil

The whistlo sounded shortly aftei with reds attacking hard. The Ran gitikei team had not the finish of Horowhenua, and as a result many good opportunities were missed. Bad kicking was also very noticeable.
