A unique suggestion for relieving unemployment was voiced at the Palmerston North Borough Council meeting en Monday night. It was as simple as it was sublime—that the unemployed should be engaged as inspectors to catch the many cyclists who ride at night without lights. It was suggested that the fines received would pay the inspectors’ wages., “My farms in ; Scotland are let to tenants, and I regret to say that by every mail I get letters from them saying they cannot pay any rent because of the competition from New Zealand,” said the Governor-General* Sir Charles Fergusson, amidst laughter, at the civic reception in Eltham the other day. “ This is much too severe, !l knew, but it is what I have to thank Taranaki for.” For the present, while in prosperous New Zealand, with good prospects ahead year for which he was glad, he did not sympathise with his tenants' point of view, but, he added, perhaps he would see matters differently when he returned Home.
