The Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., are paying out Is 6d per lb for butterfat supplied during the month of May.

Mr A. MeLaehlan, who has been on the local railway staff for many years, has received notice of his transfer to Woodville.

Tenders are invited for the purchase for removal of a 4-roomed house and outbuildings situated on a property on the continqation of Grey Street.

Mr Gagliardi, overseer for the Public Works Department at Shannon, has received notice of his transfer to Palmerston North, and Mr Goldsmith, of the office staff to Westport.

An “afternoon” social was held on Wednesday by the ladies of the Croquet Club at "the residence of Mr and Mrs A. Mason, Vance Street, when an enjoyable time was spent by those pre-r sent. '

At a' special meeting of the Shannon School Committee last evening the resignation of Mr F. Goldsmith, as secretary, was received with regret. , Mr Bert Hill was elected to fill the vacancy.

A concert will be given in the Maoriland Theatre on Tuesday evening by a party of performers from Palmerston North- and Levin, many of whom were prize winners at the recent Manawatu competitions. The proceeds are in aid of Miss Butler’s candidature in connection with the Queen Carnival to raise funds for St. Patrick’s Church, at Palmerston North. A firstclass programme of elocutionary, vocal and musical items is to be presented and patrons are promised «a treat.

The Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Health, will be visiting Levin on Tuesday next, when a deputation of representatives of school committees in the district will wait on him in connection with the establishment of a dental clinic in this district with "a view to obtaining more specific .and definite information on the matter. Shannon have been invited to send two delegates and the committee last evening appointed the chairman (Mr A. E. Hyde) and secretary (Mr B. Hill) to represent them. A conference of representatives of the school committees in the Manawatu is to be held, probably at Levin, on June 29th, when the establishment of dental clinics will be discussed, therefore it is hoped valuable information will be obtained for the meeting by the visit of the Minister.

It was decided, at the County Council meeting on Saturday, that the IlokioWaitarere Road be formed up with the grader as soon as possible, in order to allow the water to drain away.

An application from the Women’s Rest Committee for a donation towards the building fund came before the County Council on Saturday. The County chairman (Mr G. A. Monk) said that the project appealed to him somewhat. Such an institution would be of considerable benefit, not only to the town of Levin, but to women .visitors from all over the County. He was not prepared to move that any stated sum be granted; any donation would have to come out of unauthorised expenditure and be paid by the whole County. He suggested that the question of making a grant, or otherwise, be deferred till the annual estimates are considered, at a meeting probably to be hold on June 23rd. This was agreed to.

A letter with reference to the draining of flood-water from Kawiu . Road was received by the County Council on Saturday from the Town Clerk, who drew attention to the need for the early installation of a eiilvert across the County Road, The matter was referred to the councillors for the riding, with power to act.

A meeting of National Liberals and others opposed to the Reform Government was held in the Hall at Eltham last night. Delegates from various centres of the Egmont electorate were present, and expressed an almost unanimous wish that Mr C. S. ' Wilkinson should stand against the Hon. O. J. Hawken at the General Election. Mr W. C. Green, who contested the seat at the last election, was present, and stated that his present intention: was to be a candidate in the National Liberal interests, but he would be guided by his committee, drawn from the district around the coast. The meeting unanimously resolved to immediately send a deputation to Mr Wilkinson, who later arrived at the meeting, where he was enthusiastically received. He explained that in his position he could only stand as Independent, and he would not oust the Government unless there was a better one to replace it. He promised to give a reply to the request of the meeting within a week. . .

An Englishman in Paris, writing to a friend in Auckland, relates the following amusing incident, illustrative of . how they do things in France. The driver of a two-horse lorry, which was heavily „ laden with bales of cotton, chose for his midday siesta a . busy place like the Quai du Louvre, opposite the Pont du Carrousel. He was a kindly man, and had taken' off the horses ’ bridles and fastened on their nosebags before tumbling two bales of cotton on to the footpath for his own couch. He, slept soundly,' oblivious of the noise of traffic that rumbled and honked around him. Right in the of the city, on the Boulevard des" Italiens, a man and his wife were displaying mechanical toys to passers-by. When.;the hour of mid-day approached, madamc retired to the kerb, and there prepared and cooked on a tiny charcoal stove, a succulent meal. This attracted no atention from the Parisians. The spirit of laissez-faire lias made it difficult for the people to become accustomed to obeying the traffic-police and signals. I
