A special meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held on Saturday morning, to receive the audited balance sheet for the year ended March 31st, .1927. It was accompanied by a letter from the Auditor-General certifying it to be correct, with the exception that the payment out of the general account of interest on the Otaki North Bank Loan, secured over a special area,’was without authority of law. The County Clerk explained that when lie communicated with the Auditor-General regarding the Taungata bridge, he was under the impression that he had also applied for permission to make the payment above referred to, for which the precedent consent of the Audit Office was necessary. In a further letter, the Auditor-General stated that, beyond the exception taken, he did not propose to take further action. The chairman, in addressing the Council, said he did not intend to discuss the balancesheet at that stage. He moved that it be finally settled, and published in. accordance with the Counties’ Act. He added that the office staff, in the preparation of the balance sheet, had done very well. The exception was merely due to a slip, as the necessary authority* could readily have been obtained. It was very nice to know that the bal-ance-sheet had gone through with the exception of that small “tag.” The motion , was seconded , by Cr. Bryant and aarried. * .
