Her services in this organisation date from its founding in the district, and when the honour was conferred upon her at the annual meeting of the Association yesterday, members were enthusiastic in their encomiums of her practical interest in patriotic relief Avork. Mrs Gibson had written a letter to the Society, but, as it turned out, she was also able to attend the meeting. The chairman (Mr P. W. Goldsmith) read the letter, in which Mrs Gibson asked to be relieved of the position of a member of the executive committee, on which she had served since its inception, but from which she found it necessary to witlidraAV owing to her impending departure. , The chairman said that Mrs Gibson had been a very useful member of the committee. He moved that the society place on record its appreciation of her services and. wish hew. a pleasant trip and a safe return. The motion was seconded ;by Mr Kilsby. Mr licedAvell suggested that Mrs Gibson be granted. lea\ r e of absence, as it Avas likely that she Avould return in tAvelve months. Her knoAATedge of the northern district had been very useful to the society, and they Avould be very glad to have her services again when she returned to L'evin.
The suggestion Avas made by Mr L. I. HoAvell (Paraparaumu) that Mrs Gibson be appointed a life member of the Association in recognition of her good Avork. Air G. P. Cat-ley supported this proposal, and said that Mrs Gibson had been one of the most active members of the organisation throughout its existence.
It Avas then resolved that, Airs Gibson be the first life member of the Association. The motion Avas also phssed placing her services on record and wishing her bon voyage. In responding, Mrs Gibson said she Avas very grateful for the sentiments expressed, because she had always endeavoured to do the Avork to the best of her ability. She had ..been secretary of the Shannon Patriotic Society until it merged into the HoroAvhenua Association. In this field of endeavour, as in other phases of life, she had ahvays tried to do something to help those Avho Avere in need *of assistance, and if she had succeeded in making their conditions better it Avas sufficient recompense. She thanked the society and assured the members that if she could render it any assistance Avhile she Avas away, she Avould be only , too pleased to do so. In conclusion she expressed the hope that the society Avould continue to carry out successfully its good work. Mr Keedwell moved and Mr Kilsby seconded that the society grant Mrs Gibson leave of absence for twelve months, in lieu of accepting her resignation, and this was carried.
