YOUNG MAN’S TRAGIC DEATH.

KILLED BY OVERTURNED DRAY AT MAKERUA. A sad fatality occurred at Makerua on Tuesday afternoon, when' a young man named Martin Kenneth Dalzell, 21 vears of age, son of Mr and Mrs T. Dalzell, lost his life through the capsizing of a dray which he was driving. Deceased at the time was engaged with a dray and horse in loading rubbish from behind the stripuer at the Makerua flaxmill and carting it to a dump at the rear of the mill. H.s father and brother hearing him call out several times to the horse, and thinking something might have happened, proceeded to the spot, where they found the dray capsized and the horse lying on its back, deceased being under the dray apparently dead: As they were unable to remove the dray further assistance was called and Dr. Mackereth was immediately sent for, but on his arrival could only pronounce life to be extinct.

Deceased was a very popular young man and was well known in football circles, being captain of the Shannon Club’s junior fifteen. Much sympathy will be extended, to Mr and Mrs Dalzell and family in their tragic bereavement. The high esteem in which deceased was held was evidenced’ by the large cortege which followed his remains to the Shannon cemetery yesterdfty afternoon, there being over 40 motors cais and a very large number of people walking. Among those present were Messrs W‘. Hannan (President of the Horowhenua Rugby Council) and Mr J. W. Procter (who is also a member of the, Council), officials from Foxton Football Club, Mr P. Robinson (secretary of the Flaxworkers’ Union), and the deceased club, mates, of whom Messrs Wilson, Coyle, Mason, Bircliall, Gray and Wannan acted as pall bearers. On tljjjp arrival of the cortege from Makerua a service was conducted in the Veil. Bede’s Church by the Rev. J. A. Farnell, who also conducted the service at the graveside. Many beautiful floral emblems were laid on the casket and the deceased’s parents have been the recipients of numerous messages from all over the Dominion.
