OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB
WINTER MEETING TO-MORROW
GENERAL REVIEW OF FIELDS.
(By * ’ Silken Rein. ”)
To-morrow (Saturday) and on Monday the Otaki Maori Racing Club will hold their annual winter meeting on the Club’s course at Otaki Railway. This meeting has in' the past, especially on the holiday, proved a very popular outing drawing large crowds from the capital city and right along the coast as far as Wanganui. The Great Northern events at Ellerslie are held on the same day, but although a large interest is taken in that fixture, it will, on account .of its distance from these parts, have no effect on the attendance at the local meeting. If the acceptances received are any indication as to the success of a race meeting this year’s fixture should go down on record as, at least, one of the best ever held on this course, for the number of runners engaged is a good deal in excess of that received in other years. The size of the fields also suggests, that Otaki should keep up its reputation of at least oue substantial dividend at each fixture. The going on the course at Otaki at this time of the year is always more or less on the heavy side but a fine day at the opening should find it a good deal better than has been the case in some years past. TRAIN ARRANGEMENTS. On the first day trains for Otaki will leave Shannon at 7.44 and 9.32, Levin 8.11 and 9.55, arriving at Otaki at 8.43 and 10.23. Return trains leave Otaki at 4.25 and 7.57.
On Monday, June 4tli, in addition to Saturdays timetable, a special train will depart from Shannon 8.56, Levin 9.20, arriving at Otaki at 9.51. Return special for Palmerston North leaves Otaki at* 4.50. Return fares (Ist and 2nd. class) from Shannon ss„ 3s 3d.; Levin 3s Id and 2s.
Quite a large number of local sportsmen intend making the trip and fine weather is all that is needed to provide an enjoyable outing an give the club a successful meeting.
11 30 —TARAR.ua I-lACK HURDLES HANDICAP, of 150 sovs., one mile and a half.
The opening event. on the card promises thirteen runners. The top-weight San Pedro has no recent form to Avarrant support, his last placing being a first and second at Eoxton in January. Star Shell lias not had a race for some 12 to 14 months and will be regarded by speculators as somewhat jof a “mystery” until he is seen in company. Hymestrason, it will be remem- < bered had his first outing over the, hurdles at Otaki and when with a goo|b' enough lead to spell victory, fell at the last obstacle. This resulted in his' being spelled for awhile and he started again on the flat. At this he was apparently a failure so was tried over the battens again at Wanganui and caught the public unaAvares. He finished 2 lengths in front of Mister , Gamp, a good performance, and as the result of this win lias been allotted another 121 b. A win for Lady Gay ' should come in this class in- the near : future. At Wellington in January she ran a good third in a Highweiglit and followed up with a second at Pahiatua, then a third at Dannevirke, while second stake money came her way atMasterton at the end of the March. She then went south to Nelson and caused a little surprise by Avinning the Nelson Cup, showing consistency by running second on the following day. If she can manage the obstacles, well it looks as though Lady Gay should account for a majority of the runners. Peshwa is up 81bs on his Avih at.Wanganui and is expected to do even better on his home course than he did at the river city. Radiate who Avas responsible for a double figure dividend at last dune meeting has taken to this class but has not shown up to any extent. In the Steeplechase handicap at Wanganui he was more prominent. He took charge of the field right from the start, leading all the way and his sup- ■ porters were preparing to collect an appreciable dividend when he was upset at the last obstacle. On that performance he deserves consideration in this or his other engagement in the Otaki Hack. Strategy.has little to recommend him but Glengariff is improving with a third in his last start. At Egmont in February, Whisogne ran second in a seven furlong event but in this class his best Avas a fourth at the last meeting. This is close enough however, to make him read as dangerous. , Ratapiko cannot be recommended while Sir Moment’s best was a thiid in the Hopelands Hurdles at Woodville in February. Carrigallen is new to the game but his racing on the flat ivas only fair. At Westport in March, he secured a first and two thirds over distances under seven furlongs. Red Bank’s recommendations is in his breeding. His sire, All Red, was responsible for three winners at Wanganui all of whom won over obstacle events. This son of All Red is a stable companion to that, promising ’chaser Puwhero and the recent, performances of his half brothers will account for most of the support accorded him. A trio in form are: — Hymestrason, Peshwa and ; Lady Gay.
12 I C—KUKU MAIDEN HANDICAP 14,13 of 100 sovs., six furlongs.
This race for novices has drawn the best field with no less than 22 due to face the starter. At the October meeting the Avinner of this' event Avas found in Mr T. M. Wilford’s Rotowliero, Avho returned a sensational dividend. His colours Avill be carried in this race by the 2-year-old gelding Tclieka. This son of Night Raid and Russian Main has shoAvn much promise over short distances but does not appear to hang on too Avell. His best recommendation is a second to Banket at Tauherenikau over a distance of five furlongs Avliich was covered in 60 sec. Royal Lover finished third in a 6 furlong race at Feilding behind Gold Bag and Fermanagh. ' At Egmont this month, she went out twelfth selection among hack company on the first day. She shoAved a lot of pace and finished into fifth place. The second day found her actually favourite but she Avas beaten out of a place, finishing in the same position. The experience she has gained in racing should stand her good stead among this field of non-winimrs.. Tane'kaha Avas placed third in a 5. furlong race at Waipukurau at Easter. The two-vear-old Acre gelding, Consent, gave* great promise early in the season. He finished second to High Disdain at the Wellington January meeting, doing the five in 60$ sec. The folloAA’ing day he ran third in a 6 furlong nurseKy handicap Avliich Avas covered ins J A spell from public may have had a beneficial effect. At Woodville in February, Vindication Avas headed off in the maiden stakes by Shining Star. She has no later placing to recommend her. A pair Avith recent placings are The Dove and Dancing Star who secured seconds on the first and second days respectively at the last Nelson meeting. The latter, a filly by the imported sire, Great Star, is a promising youngster showing much improvement daily in her track Avork. Just So, a half-sister to Kiosk, Ao Marama, by Gasbag and Beaumont’s full brother, Arkansas on . breeding lines are entitled to a certain amount of respect. When the machine' closes public choice will probably be: Royal Lover Dancing Star and Consent. | Q —WAITOHU HACK HANDICAP * of 130 sovs.,-six furlongs.
Argue 711 Ardaile .... 7 0 Another big field of sixteen will find punters a little puzzled, sortiug out and “juggling” Avith form. The topweight. Keddar, is uoav at his best, scoring a Avin at Wanganui and a first and second at HaAvera. He Avill, in all probability, have the services of R. Reed. The Raider’s .last success Avas at Feilding, where he Avon a “six” with 9.2. Lady’s Boy is consistent, but appears to be a little unlucky at >he present time. Early in February, he Avon at Matamata and followed up by saluting the judge at Te Aroha a short time after. Since then seconds have been' the best, one at Avondale. Waikato and Wanganui. He is also engaged in the open six, and may not try conclusions Avith * Keddar, Avhom he has not yet met. The first day at Wanganui, Chelone Avas prominent in the early stage of the race, but being a little fresh faded at the finish. The following start shoAved a remarkable 'improvement when he ran into third .3lace. ‘ He is an attractive 3-year-old ; by Leighton and recent running suggests lie is fast coming to. his best. Spearmiss attracted attention at the Wellington March meeting Avhevc she was beaten by a head on the first day and accounted for a mile race on the lecond day. At Wanganui, Callanmore ,vas fourth on the first day and second in the second day. The next start may and him there. Tanagra, who has anatlier engagement, is a good sort bui, ias not shown up since he won the Hack at Napier in March in Avhich •vent ho carried 8.1. Argue has been -mining just close enough to be considered a possibility. Dreamy Avho is reported to be going on the right way has a couple of good races to his credit, while Le Champ is knocking with a second at HaAvera. Mark Mint was responsible for a good performance at. Nelson, winning tAvo races and placed second in three starts. On the face of this he appears leniently treated as regards to weights. Patearoa Avon the Novice Stakes at Dannevirke while Second Thought accounted for a similar race at the Marlborough meeting at Trentham and also ran third at Nelson this month. Dominion Rose has had minor placings in other seasons, Avhile Ardaile has a previous engagement and Niglitwilfeh cannot bo rccom mended. The winning post should find Callanmore, Dreamy and Mark Mint in handy positions. If Lady’s Boy starts in this event lie wil 1 be the dangerous one.
l 45— RATJKAWA CUP, of 350 sovs.; one mile and a quarter.
the post in the principal event. Three of the eighteen accepted have aso paid up for the second leg, the Hu a Handicap. Paitonu is coming on well and in two starts, once at Hawera and Wanganui, the Bisogne chestnut accounted for the biggest proportion o± the stake on each occasion. At HaAvera, he carried home 7.9 and 8.5 at Wanganui. The extra allotment or 61b should not trouble him. Glenross Avas fresh at Wanganui, but his finishing effort Avas good enough to suggest he has to be reckoned f with in the near future. Royal Damon is shoAvmg a perfercnce for longer' races. At ManaAvatu fixture, he finished fourth in a mile and furlong race and Avon a seven on the folloAviug day. Wanganui suav him a starter, in tAvo events, a six and a mile and a quarter. He was unplaced in the shorter distance but finished third in the big race. The 31b less he has to carry to-morroAv avili also be appreciated. Nukumai is lively for an old “nag” but his racing Avas Avithout success at the Egmont and river meetings. He will probably come on better later in the month at Avliich time he struck form last year. Vesperus Avith 8.8 finished sixth in one start at Wanganui. Ring Boy 7.7 and David Garrick 8.12 finished, in that order at. Tauherenikau with a length separating. The latter is 61b better off on this occasion. Atereria has been a disappointment of late, though he Avas quite good earlier in the season. Lady Limond has been spelled for a Avhile, but though she has never Avoir over this distance, she is regarded by many as the most likely one. This is accounted 'for by the fact that she races better when fresh. Kilmiss is an irregular sort and it is seldom knoAA 11 Avlien she is ready. She only needs, hoAvevcr. to slioav her best form to prove dangerous. Beaumont is one that will make more appeal. He ran tivo A T ery creditable fourths at Wanganui, a sign that lie is returning to his form of other seasons. Addlepate’s recommendations is a second to Perle de Leon at Waipukurau, Avhile Otlion Avill have a job to find money though his connections consider his prospects as good. -Wanderlust shoAA r od a remarkable burst of speed for a short distance at Feilding at Easter, and he should be considerably hardened up by 110 AV to go the distance. Kilperon appears a little put of place, and a]so claims an engagement in the open six.. It may be, as breeding suggests, he has. shoAvn a liking to go a longer distance and if that be so he may prove troublesome on the minimum mark. He has credentials too from Nelson Avlicre he ran seconds to First Acre and Ramesis. Toapaiti is reported to bo training on well while Patluki has little form to Avarrant any outstanding sup . port. Summed up, the field has many possibilities, but on recent form the most likely ones appear to be:—
Lady Limond, Royal Damon and Beaumont.
2 30— OTAKI HACK HANDICAP, of 130 sovs., one mile and fiftyfive yards.
The hack distance race has the smallest field with eleven and it is quite possible that it will dwindle a good deal as there are three of these runners due in other races. Bisox has the best credentials Avith a second, third and a first in the last three outings. Avro Avon its first race on this course last June and is noAV coming to form after a good spell. With 8.9 he finished next behind Bisox '.at Wanganui Borsalene has had a run of three firsts, a second and a third, made. up with a first, second and third at Tauharenikau and tAA r o firsts at Trentham in April. The fact that she has 151bs less to carry to-moriw Avill be an inducement to speculators. Rotowhero Avith a stone more beat Borsalene Avlien she ran third and on this appears to have much the advantage of the Aveights. The Gasbag representative Avill no doubt be remembered from the Octo-, ber meeting Avliere he Avon his first race. Lieutenant Bill surprised backers at Bulls and Avith only 21b more to carry reads as dangerous. Lady Cynthia* Avas successful /m this course 12 months ago, but has not been prominent of late. Mandarine aa’ou a mile race, early in March, but is not consistent. Closefire and Handsome have no recent form while. Radiate may prefer the hurdles. If lie declines his previous engagement m favour of this event he can be relied upon to give of h.is best. King Mart is overdue for a stake but it should not be long iioav. Wanganui runnings suggests: —
Avro, King Mart and Bisox.
3 jg—HUIA HANDICAP, of 200 sovs., six furlongs..
A feAv of the fifteen runners engaged in this event appear a little out of class, Avhile others claim engagements earlier in the day. With the principal race over, this event will evoke much interest Avith those who caught that race. Very often is found the tAvo big money races going to ' the one stable and in the event of one of the folloAviug horses saluting the judge the possibilities of a stable double Avill find extra money for their stable companions shown in parenthesis; Glenross (Limited), Nukumai (Lady Limond), Vesperus (Royal Ceres), Ring Boy (Cerf), Wanderlust (Fee Simple),
Kilperon (Duke Abbey). Duke Abbey since his change of residence has had very little racing Avitli equal success. ManaAvatu meeting found him third both in a 7 furlong and mile -event. His trainer, Mr E. T. Yuile lias not had many AA r ins this season but is getting a good team together. A change of luek came his Avay Avlien at Nelson in tivo days his stable produced tAvo firsts and tAvo seconds. A good run does not last long, but it should see the Levin' trainer over this meeting, Avliere he has, in addition to Duke Abbey, tAvo or three others engaged. Royal Ceres Avith 8.6 Avon at the Marlborough meeting but 011 the first day was beaten by Kilperon 7.4 and First Acre 8.1 This pair still have the best of the Aveights. The latter pair thenmet at Nelson Avlicre with a difference of 51bs, the. son of Acre prevailed by 4 lengths. At the published Aveights they should be about on a par this time, but it is not yet knoAvn which event Kilperon Avill take on. Lady Limond Avill most likely fulfill her earlier engagement Avhile Epistle has had no placings in the last tAvo months. Ivaiti in rather poor company Avon at liaAA'kes Bay, but is a useful sort and will make much appeal. Monaghan cannot be recommended but Huikai has shoAvn a liking for’ this distance. He is hitting out freely in his track work and pleasing Avatehers. Helotis appeals even in this company, her performances at Marlborough meeting including a first and a dead heat for first, Avere attractive, good times being recorded in each instance. Cerf is a little out of class, but in his trip to Nelson, he Avas awarded Ist stake money in the RedAvood Memorial (mile and distance). Fee Simple in at this Aveight reads dangerous, as lie can travel some Avlien in the mood. This aaull be kept in mind by his admirers Avhile the form displayed at the end of March will not be forgotten. Lady’s Boy and Toapaiti are doubtful starters. The favourite will probably be found among:—
Limited, Duke Abbey and Huikad.
4 0— TE lIORO HACK HANDICAP - * of 150 sovs.; seven furlongs.
The form shown by the majority of these runners in the past tAvo months has in most instances been rathers irregular .- and the divided opinions of speculators and Avitli a large field to select from this event should prove a good betting race. Henna Avas very consistent, early in the season but appears to have dropped back a good deal lately, probably the" result"’b'f too much racing. Borsalene should make a good performance in Avhich ever eA r ent she is started in. Maui Avon and paid Avell at the ManaAvatu fixture in April and is asked to c.arrr 81b more to-morroAV. Shining Star rail third in the same event only half 1 heads separating the placed horses. Being 91b better off on this occasion the Star Stream chestnut Avill appeal more. llolus Bolus 8.1 Avon Avell at Feilding, but Avitli 9.9 and 9.5 could not stave off Borsalene 9.3 and 9.5 at the Marlborough tAvo-day meeting, ilc has come down a good deal in Aveight hoAvever. No Favours Avill need public form to find any quantity of support, Avhile Pangolin is also lacking in that, respect. Lieutenant Bill and Tanagva, both useful sorts, may fulfill their earlier engagements. Sandburr had a very good run up North earlier in the season, but around Wellington province liis best Avas a mile hack at Dannevirke in 1.44 . Kindle has been an expensHe proposition and cannot be recommended on past performances. Essential Avill have friends at Otaki, while there will be plenty of •money for him from his home toAvn. He is reported to be coming on well. Prior to the opening of the steeplechase season, Gasnapper Avas knocking with seconds and thirds and at Wanganui and Egmont meetings, his best was two thirds. The croAvd he jbeat Avere a good lot and the Avinning pair in each ease av ill not lie in the field to-morroAv. Hine Ilohoro and Volplane Avere Avinners early this year, Avhile : Wheel and Dominion Rose are uoav , this season. A trio that will liftve friends are: —
Essential, Gasnapper and Shining Star.
