HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL
SOUTHERN DISTRICT MATTERS. The following business connected with the southern portion of the County was dealt with at the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday:— Manakau Deviations. Mr. J. H. Staples, of Manakau, wrote with reference to the old road near the concrete bridge, where the Council had taken a portion of his property. He asked the Council to survey the old roatl and put in pegs so tha't he could have the fencing attended to immediately. The chairman stated that an engineering survey only had been made, and Mr. Callender (County assistant-engin-eer) could not make the full survey until further details were complete. The chairman added that he had asked the District Engineer to undertake the survey of D'Ath's deviation, but the Department was unable to do it. Both these matters would have to wait Cr. Ryder said he had told Mr. Staples that there would be no objection to his sowing the land in question, and he did this, but stock went over the ground and trampled it up. Mr. Staples had been in hopes that the place could be fencedj but until the survey, was completed it could not oe fenced. The compensation which Mr. Staples was to receive had to be decided by the Chairman and himself (Cr. Ryder). The chairman stated that the District Engineer had said that if the Council engaged an outside surveyor to do the work, the Highways Board would bear half the cost of the land survey and legalisation and engineering survey in connection with the viation. On the motion of Cr. Ryder, seconded bv Cr. Bryant, it was decided that Mr. C. W. Foster be engaged to complete the survey of D 'Ath 's and Staples > deviations. • Hooding Near Otaki Bridge. Mr. E. H. Letts, of Otaki, wrote stating that, owing t.o the road approach at the north end of the. Otaki bridge having been built so high, his property had been flooded. The flood would not have caused trouble to himself and neighbours if the culvert had been adequate. ■' The water was on paddocks which had never previously been visit: ed by flood-water during the time he had been in possession of the land. \ The chairman suggested that a small sub-committee be set up to make an inspection and see what land had been flooded and what land was likely to be flooded in the future.. Water had come over the road' and gone into'Mr. Anderson 's, but he thought that it had done that before the road work was carried out. How the water had gone on to Mr. Letts' he did not know, because it was some distance from the boundary. > It was decided that the chairman and Crs. Ryder and Jensen, with the engineer, inspect the locality., h'y .•'*•-:'■• Pukehou Deviation. fu \ A le ; t£cr was received from -Mr.; G. ! Bcvan, with regard to the Pukehau deviation, stating that he would, charge interest at the rate of 10 per, cent, per annum on the amount of £76 to be paid to him by the Council for land taken from him for road deviation purposes, such interest to run from April 3rd, 1928—the date of the settlement—until the date o'f payment. ■ ; It was decided that the matter of compensation be referred to the County solicitors for the completion of the formalities in respect of this property and of the portion of native,land taken in the same locality. (■, Cleaning of a Drain. Mr. G. H. Clay, of Waikanae, wrote stating that, when doing the draincloaning required by the Council, he j was taken seriously ill, with the result that he had to undergo an opcraition in the Palmerston hospital. He had cleaned, .the drain within six chains of the road, and as soon as the doctor allowed him to resume work he would finish it". The matter was referred to the engineer. Gate in Otaki Gorge. Mr. T. S. Arcus wrote asking for permission to erect a gate across the road at the entrance to. his property in the Otaki Gorge. He stated that there was previously a gate there, but it had fallen to pieces. He had interviewed the only other settlor - in the locality, who had no objection to the proposal. It was resolved to grant the request, during the pleasure of the Council. Works Committee. Recommendations by the Works Committee were dealt with as under: — ! Waikawa Beach Road.—That this road receive maintenance attention where required whilst the plant is m the vieinity.-*-It was reported that the , work had been done. I Otaki Gorge Road.—That the neces'- . sary steps be taken to cjosc the Otaki Gorge Road to heavy traffic during -the I months of May to September, 1928, from the end "of the subsidiary highway to the termination of the Otaki I Gorge Road. I The chairman said that this resolution meant that anybody who wished to use the road for heavy traffie purposes , would have to come to the Council to make arrangements for repairs to be effected as the result of sueh traffie. The recommendation was adopted. Obstruction of the Highway, Mana-
