SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.
The above meeting was held m the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Cra T. C. Thwaites, B. Downes, iu. J. S. Spencer, Jas. f Richardson, Jas. Ourran, jun., and Jas. Cumin, sen An apology for absence was received from wood«"bridgb and metal pit ' Mr Kissell, chief electrical engineer, replying concerning access, to the bridge erected by the Public Works Department on Mr Wood's property near the end of Grand Street, stateu that it appeared that the Department had no interest or right in the matter. Eeferring to the metal pit near the bridge, mention was made of some person letting metal from the creek without first obtaining permission from the 'Council, it being pointed out that the Council are liable for royalty to Mr Woods. . . , , . The Town Clerk was instructed to write the person concerned asking from whom he got permission to take metal; also requesting payment for same viz. Is 6d per yard. STANSELL'S DBAIN. Mr A. E. Burling, manager of Bryant's Estate, wrote stating that the drain running from the Otaura stream to their woolshed had been cleaned, and asking the Council to clean their part from the woolshed to the writer's orchard. He pointed out that it had j not been cleaned since Messrs Swin- , dlehurst Bros did it some years ago.— Eeferred to the Road Committee, with i power to act. GENERAL. The Secretary of the Shannon Football Club wrote stating that the club regretted that there had been reason for complaint of objectionable language amongst players practising on Ithe Domain, and that the Committee are going to do their best to prevent a recurrence of the offence.—Received LIGHTS ON DOMAIN. In connection with the removal of the lights on the Domain, a reply was received from the Football Club stating that the Council had apparently misunderstood their letter. The Club , are willing,to give assistance in removing the poles, but are not prepared to go to any expense in respect to rewiring, etc. They drew attention to the fact that the Council receives £lO from the Union for the use of the Domain, also that the Club last year paid '£s deposit'on the lights and a further £3 this year, pointing out that only two lights out of the five are of any use to those practising, the average number of units used per night being two. The letter concluded with the hope that the Council would meet the wishes of the club. " The Town Clerk reported that a deposit of £5 for the use of the lights for last season was made by .the club. The arrangement with the club waß at the- rate of 3s Cd per hour, equal to 2* units, and on that basis the club had to pay £4 16s 7d. The Power Board's account for 69 units was £2 6s, and one globe replaced, £l, making a total of £3 6s. The profit, therefore, ' made by the Council was £1 10s 7d, of which amount it was resolved last year to refund 75 per cent to, the Football Club, this amounting to £1 2s lid With the amount overpaid on deposit, 3s sd, this made a total of £1 6s id to their credit. The Mayor stated that the Athle- j tic Club might want the lights as at | present situated for holding evening meetings, and instead of removing the lights it might be advisable to put m extra poles. Cr. Thwaites suggested a conference between the sports bodies and the Council in an endeavourer to arrange the lights to suit all parties. This was-agreed to by the Council, the next Council meeting being fixed for the conference. ROADMAN'S REPORT. The roadman (P. Haley) reported as follows:—Have carted 9% yards of metal on to Main North road, Ballance and Margaret Streets; and had the grader over the two latter streets. Have widened Nathan Terrace to a width of 15 feet from Sheehan Street to the boundary at the north end of the borough. The footpath from the Club Hotel to Vance Street has' been tar-sealed. Pot holes in footpath in Ballance Street have been tilled. Inspected the pipe line and galleries and scoured the water mains. Have collected and carted rubbish to the . dUmP * RANGEE' REPOET. The ranger (J. Swindlehurst) reported having found one cow wandering on the roads' during the past fortnight. This had been returned to its owner,
