SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING.
The new school committee met in the schoolroom last evening. Present: Messrs A. Coates, G. Booker,, T. Ingley, A. Hill, C. Hansmann, W. Christian and F. Goldsmith (secretary). In the unavoidable absence of Mr Hyde, Mr Coates was elected to the chair.
The sub-committee appointed to inspect the basket ball ground reported that they had recommended to Mr White that the ground be used temporarily and that progress reports of how it wears to determine what the Committee will do. They also reported that the tennis court wants finishing. It was not a good job and will require attention for next season. , The tender of Mr J. C. Retter was accepted for the supply of firewood.
The secretary stated that the Borough Council’s account of £5 being the annual charge for water t# the school, which had been rendered to the Education Board, had, been returned by the latter, stating that they had recently resolved that the school committee must pay water charges out of their incidental expenses. Mr Goldsmith ; informed the meeting that the chairman considered it the duty of the Board to supply water, as before the water was installed they provided tanks. The Council could not be expected to give them water for nothing. It. was resolved to write to the Board on the lines suggested by. Mr Hyde. Mr Coates reported that along with Messrs Hyde and Goldsmith they had made an inspection of the school and grounds. They recommended that the plot oil the eastern side of the infants’ school which was planted on Arbor Day, be cleaned up, such as removing weeds and grass. The school is in good order and the attendance liad been good up till a day or two ago. 1
Reference was made to the correspondence received by the old committee in regard to a movement to establish a dental clinic with Levin as the centre. The old committee had been approached by the Tokomaru Committee to start the movement and they had circularised the sellout committees in the Manawatu, and in nearly all cases the latter were willing to support the movement. It had been a recommendation from the late committee, that they should go on With this matter. It was resolved that the secretary write to the various school committees calling attention to the correspondence which had passed between them, and enquire if they are in favour of a conference of representatives of school committee being held at Levin to j discuss the matter, the date of the meeting to be fixed later. Another recommendation from the late committee was to urge on the matter of a septic tank. The secretary, stated that the Committee’s contribution towards the cost was £B6, and they hacl £32 in hand which had been laised by school concerts.
