SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The above meeting was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt), Crs. T. C. Thwaites, A. E. Hyde, R. Downes,' Jas. Richardson, Jas. Curran, jun., and Jas. Curran, sen. LIGHTS IN DOMAIN. The secretary of the Shannon Football Club wrote drawing the Council’s attention to the position of the lights on the Domain. Since the lower football ground had been done away with and the cycle ti'ack had been constructed, the. three lights at the lower end were of no use to players at practice. If these three lights could be shifted to the upper end of the ground, they would not only give light# over the whole of the playing area, but would also be of benefit to those using the cycle track. If necessary, assistance would be given by players to remove the lights. —Permission was granted the Football Club to remove the lights at their own expense. GENERAL.
An application for a permit to erect a dwelling in Ballance Street by Mr W. Jones, was refeerred to the Building Committee.
The ranger. (J. Swindlehurst) reported having impounded three cows. Also, one horse and one cow were claimed by owners while being driven to the pound. 11. Murdoch wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the drains running along.the Foxton road. With winter coming, heavy, rains, etc., he would like to see them cleaned out immediately. • • The Public Works Department wrote stating that a subsidy of £.O 5s had been granted towards asphalting the footpath in front of i the Post Office property in Stciut Street. ■ Advice was received from the Horowhenua Power Board stating that an extra street lamp would be erected in Plimmer Terrace as requested by the Council. In reply to a question regarding the position of the Council’s contribution jf £1350 towards the Manawatu bridge ioan, the Town Clerk stated that, b# fore raising this amount, he was endeavouring to ascertain from the Public Works Department, the Minister’s decision relating to the deputation asking for a grant towards the Sheehan Street bridge. Cr. Downes reported that the Roads Committee had made an inspection of -he borough roads and found them in good order considering the recent dij weather. They recommended that the small bridge at the south end of Plinin.cr Terrace be widened, as the turn ,nto Graham Street was too . sharp. An elderly man offered to attend to plots at the cemetery belonging to abientces and others for a charge of 5s per year per plot.—The offer was accepted and plot owners are to be 'nothnCd’ HOSPITAL BOARD’S LEVY INCREASED.
A statement was received from the Palmerston North Hospital Board showing this year’s estimates for the Board, together with the levies on the various local bodies for the year 192829. There is an increase in the levy this year, which is due to a considerable ‘increase in the activities of the Board. Last year the Shannon Borough’s lhvy was £l3l Os 9d; for this year-it will be £164 Us 3d—an increase of £33 10s 6d. The levy is made on he valuation, which is £200,525, as compared with £197,900 last year. The Town Clerk stated that if the levy continues to increase, it will be necessary to increase the Hospital rate, which is now -Jth of a penny in the £. -
