' OPENING OF SEASON AT SHANNON.

On Saturday the Shannon Golf Club held its opening day, aucl all 1 essfu i essary conditions for a in „ event were present, lhe day 8 a delightful one, a record numbei ot visitors and golfers attended. eight players took • part m tle * dian foursome competition, wh c _ won by Mr A. Saxon; of Shannon, and Miss Naylon, of Foxton, with the splendid score of 49. There other pairs, with scores of 50, while the majority were under OU. The President, Mr A. R. Blackwood, in hiS usual happy style wolcomoli players and visitors and trusted that all would find the course in S ood ° rdel and the day’s sport enjoyable. Atteinoon tea was dispensed by thel£ * and a very pleasant tune was spent by all present . . After the Canadian foursome competition, the players were free to arrange matches of their own, and full advantage was taken of the ideal conditions for this purpose; P la y uing until dusk. Before de Pa ltin £ fol home Mr Bergen, on behalf of tl * e ]f ox ; ton club, and Mr Hosie, .on behalf ot the Levin club, thanked the Shannon members for the very enjoyable daj s sport, and for the lavish way in which they had been- entertained. The President called for three hearty cheers for the ladies, and these were given with full voice and sincerity. « dlie course is now in playing order and as the fairways have been mowed they present a very beautiful picture with their long green strips of fresh grass. Considering the amount of dry weather experienced this year, the greens are in remarkably good condition, and as soon as a sufficient amount of ram falls and softens the ground tpr rolling, they will become very nearly perfeTliis year will be a particularly busy one for the club regarding matches and competitions. 1 The inter-club pictures are already arranged with Manawatu, Levin and Foxton—two matches each; while medal matches will be played each'month.’ Bogey matches will also find a place on the list, and of course,, the one-club, tombstone, and the Captain v. President matches _ will take place; so there is every indication of a most successful season. As arrangements have not yet been made regarding afternoon tea, members are kindly requested to take a plate for next Saturday. A moetipg of the ladies’ committee will be held at the golf house ,on Saturday afternoon to discuss general business.
