MISS N.Z. IN HOLLYWOOD

> Miss. Dale Austen, of Dunedin, who is making her bid for fame as Miss New Zealand, 1927, has arrived in Hollywood, California, and according to a cablegram received by her mother, Mrs. H. E. Austen, the beautiful Otago girl has been accorded a wonderful reception in America. Miss Austen and her chaperone, Mrs. Beatrice Vernon, arrived in Culver City. The Mayor of Los Angeles was among those present, and a notable gathering included the whole of the executive of Metro-Goldw’yn-Mayer, together with the famous stars Sally O’Neil and a host of others.

Miss Austen had a wonderful trip from ‘New Zealand to America, and thought Honolulu very enchanting at night. Her party decided to have a real Honolulu dinner, and on the way to the Hostel, every second person met was either a Chinese or a Jap At the hostel everything- seemed strange and picturesque. A Japanese girl in a kimono kept them supplied with hot rolls. What quaint dishes’ Stuffed green pepper, sweet succotash, and all the- time a supply of salted peanuts. Smart American girls with small, tight-fitting hats and very short shuts, dined with their menfolk.

The Paradise Heights of Honolulu reminded Miss Austen of Wellington. The gardens were beautiful, flowering hibiscus, poinciana, blossoming pine, and waving palms. Miss Austen is very anxious to succeed in filmland, and worthily represent New Zealand.
