EXERCISE FOR BEAUTY
REMEMBER MODERATION.
The modern girl needs little urging to take exercise—she has already realised what it will do for her, how her cheeks will, regain their fresh colour and her -walk its springiness. Nowadays, there is far more risk of her overdoing tliis ; or indulging in sports which are unsuitable or even dangerous, states a writer in on ox •■lmage. Tennis and swimming are perhaps the best all-round exercises for women particularly the latter, as not only is it a delightful form of sport, but also it is one of the best natural beautifiers and is within the reach of all of us. It brings into play every muscle, rhythmically and without jerking. IV you cannot get to the sea or the oaths regularly you get a good deal of the benefits of swimming by going through the n:o\ ements on dry land, and ;,he breaststroke will repay you n hundredfold. Do the arm movements first, and then lie across a chair and do the leg . movements, putting real vigour into them.
But .whatever- your exercise, nevei carry it to the point of over-fatigue. Often one sees girls who say they have plenty of exercise and yet they are hollow-checked and hollow-eyed You will usually find that they play tennis, or walk or swim until they are utterly exhausted —often being so tired that they are quite unable to sleep for some horn's' after getting into bed.
Don’t ovcr-clothe while you are in the sun. If you get a sun-bath in the privacy of your own garden with the very minimum of clothing, you will .find that the sun’s magic recharges you with lire and buoyancy, j'ust as a battery is chargel with electricity from a dynamo. There is every rea son in the world for our sleeveless.' now-necked tennis frocks, and only the prurient-minded can obj'ect to the sensible one-piece bathing costume. One word of caution here. Ho wever much you are going to expose your body to the sun, don’t make the mistake of exposing the back of your neck and your head. Do not think that because you are a busy housewife, exercise is not foi you. You may say that you no time to get out playing tennis every evening, or to take long walks when the work of the house and the whole catering is on your shoulders, but do not forget, that housework, properly done, is one of the best forms oi exercise. Look at it in the right light, and determine to get every ounce of beauty that it can give you Keep the windows wide open as you work, aad think of what you are doing as you do it. When, for instance, you make beds, twist your body and stretch your spine as you bend about. When you sweep a carpet, take long strokes so tliac your arms and shoulders all take part in the movements, and do not work solely from the w'rists. When you stoop, take care that you do so without bending your knees..
