NEW COUNTY ENGINEER.
ESTIMATES TO AWAIT HIS ARRIVAL. L— '
When a letter was received at the Horowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday from-the newly appointed. County Engineer, Mr J. T. M. Brewster, C.E.; of : Nelson, intimating that he would be able to take up his duties about' the end of April, Cr. Kilsby < suggested that the Council should gn* deavour to obtain Mr Brewsters services for a few days when the estimates are being made up. The chairman (Mr G. A. Monk): will have to wait till he comes. It would be a good thing for him to see the whole of the county quickly and in company with the councillors for the ridings. . Cr. Catley: I don’t, think it is possible for him-to see the whole district in the time. The majority of the cases for this year cduld be gone on with, with the assistance of Mr Callander (Acting-Engineer). The Chairman: I should, be very niUjCh opposed to any estimates being framed unless Mr Brewster is acquaint-ed-with them. He has to carry them out. . Cr. Kilsby: He is going to' receive sopie benefit from a visit of that description. ■ The position as arrived at through subsequent discussions of various-sub-jects is that 'Mr A. R. Callander, County Acting-Engineer, -will be principally engaged during the time preceding Mr Brewster’s arrival in surveying the Te * Horo Highway in connection with the Council’s appeal to the Highways Board for further financial assistance; and 1 some delay will necessarily occur in the preparation of the general estimates for 1928-29, which may be expected in May—a month later than usual.
