SHANNON ATHLETIC CLUB’S SPORTS.
» Glorious weather prevailed for the Athletic Club's fifth annual sports meeting held in the Domain on Satur- ‘ day- The attendance was not so large fis at the previous meeting, but was " quite satisfactory, about 500 persons paying for admission, many coming from Palmerston North, Levin and the surrounding district. A disappointing -* feature of the meeting was the poor fields that contested the running and cycling events, particularly the latter, despite the fact that good entries had •been received. This happening was nc ' doubt due to the holding of sports meetings at Bulls and Waituna, as it was known that several had entered at both the former place and' Shannon. Despite the depleted fields, these events * created interest, while the Highland dancing, tug-of-war 'and field events also proved ’an attraction Five teams entered for the tug-of-war, each, pull ' creating excitement, the decisions in all being close, Mangaorc winning the final from the Maori team. by a narrow margin. Some fine dancing was witnessed in the Highland dancing and «-Kdsh jig even's, the performances of the youthful competitors being loudly applauded. r lhe committee had the cycle track in good order, but owing •V to'the long spell of dry weather the * rttnning track was hard, with the result that the times recorded were slow. The officials and committee worked ; hard to give a good day’s sport and '?■ they are to be congratulated on their [ "'efforf. In the absence, owing to illness, of the- secretary, Mr T. Kohika, these duties were efficiently carried out by Mr. J. T. Bovis. Mr. G. Watson .(Levin) despatched the fields, Mr. J. /K.
