SMELLING SALTS SECRETS
When one is suffering • from that “stuffy” feeling caused by a cold in the head, nothing gives such quick relief as that afforded by the use ot -.moiling salts. Inhaled slowly, the nvigoratiiig- vapours which are released when the bottle is opened, act with magical rapidity. There are few who have not among their toilet requisites a small cut-glass bottle that once contained these delightful salts. It may be that the contents still remain, but have lost their former potency. It is a simple and inexpensive matter to replenish •these bottles. The chief ingredient is ammonium carbonate, or “rock ammonia,” which can be purchased at any chemist’s shop for a few pence an ounce. The salt should be broken into small pieces and the bottle nearly filled with it. To this should then be added a small quantity of one of the following mixtures .sufficient to thoroughly moisten the solid: —Lavender: 1 fluid ounce of ammonia water, 4 drops of oil of lavender, 2 drops of oil of lemon. Rosemary: 1 fluid ounce of ammonia water, 3drops of on of rosemary. 2 drops of oil of lavender. Violet: 1 fluid ounce of ammonia water, £ ounce ,of tincture of orris root, 10 drops of oil of lavender. Cinnamon: I fluid ounce of ammonia water, 2 drops of oil of cinnamon. Eucalyptus: 1 fluid ounce of ammonia water 30 drops of eucalyptus oil, 10 drops of oil of peppermint. Almost any perfume may bo utilised in place of those given above by employing the corresponding-concentrated extract or the essential oil.
