The usual -fortnightly- meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held m the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. L. Butt) and Crs Tlnvaites. R. Dowries, Jas. Bichardson, Jas. Curran, iun., Jas. Curran, sen., A. E. Hyde, and 'V. li. S’ Gunning. » GENERAL. An application _ was received from Mr. C. C. Pranks for a permit to erect a petrol- pump alongside the existing , pump in front of his garage in Ballanee Street. —Granted. The tenant of the borough cottage m , Stout Street wrote asking for a rejj duction in rent. —Decided to reduce • the rent from 17s 6d per week to 15s. i An application from the Shannon 1 Athletic Club for the use of the Dor main on Saturday, 3rd March, for the purpose of holding an athletic meeting was granted. In reply to an enquiry from the < Council, the District Engineer of the Railway Department wrote stating that they had no metal available for sale suitable for asphalt repairs to foot- • paths. RANGER’S REPORT. The ranger (Mr J. Swindlehurst) reported that since his. last report he had impounded 27 head of cattle and three • horses. —Adopted. ROADMAN'S REPORT. The roadman (Mr F. Haley) reported on the. month’s work as fol-lows:—-We have carted 61* yards of metal, 45 yards to the dump and the ' remainder to the footpath in Ballanee Street. The footpaths, in Stout and Venn Streets have been tar-sealed and the patli in Ballanee Street has been regraded and is now ready for tarring. The pipe-line and galleries have been inspected and the water mains have been scoured. The rubbish has been collected and taken to the depot. Also cleaned the paddling pool during the month. —Adopted. IMPROVEMENTS AT CEMETERY. Cr. Richardson, chairman of the Cemetery Committee, reported that "the concreting of the footpath at 'the south end of the Cemetery had been completed. The Mayor stated he had seen the work since it was finished and it was a great improvement. He complimented the committee on their efforts, stating that by doing a little at a time they would soon get it in order. r . NOXIOUS WEEDS. ' On the motion of Cr. Hyde, it was decided to write to the Inspector of Noxious Weeds, drawing liis attention to the growth of blackberry and briar in the borough. '< The mover mentioned that there was blackberry growing on some of the i Council’s property, and suggested that the roadmen should be instructed to clear it.

Cr. Downes, as chairman of the ROads Committee, protested against the men being taken away from the work of tarring the footpaths, to do small jobs. He asked, “Am Ito put the men on to clear blackberry in the morning?” Cr. Hyde replied that the matter was not a case of life and death. The 1 blackberry would keep for another week or two. The Mayor said that after the Inspector had made his inspection, the Council would receive a notice the same as other people. If the men were available in the meantime, then they could do the work. TARRING BALLANCE STREEI. The chairman of the Road Committee stated that the forming and tarring of Ballanee Street was a biggei job than they had anticipated; such a large quantity of clearing had to b<i removed; but the work was now progressing satif a^torily. The. removal of Mr. -Baird’s .verandah posts out into line with the kerbing makes a big difference. , WATER ON POXTON ROAD. Attention was drawn to water lying on the side of the road opposite Mr Bryant’s 'cowshed. It was stated that the water was drainage from the cowshed, and had been lying there through all the fine weather, being within six inches of coming on to the road.—lt was resolved to write to Mr. Bryant asking him to cease draining the water from the cowshed on to the side of the road and to make provision for disposing of the washing-down water from the cowshed.
