She showed him a small herd of ows and said they all belonged to her, nd that lie could take them at his ■wii risk. Then the husband came on scene, and when asked about the toek pointed out two old cows and remarked that the official could take them. “Rut what about the horses," said he official. “Oh," .replied the Maori, ‘him running up on te hills. You an catch him if you want to." The official soon found that, the.cows .new more about the locality than he lid, for they dodged skilfully through i forest of gorse. A telephone message was then sent o the city for a drover, but even with .his reinforcement the official fared no otter, for as soon as the-dogs rounded ip the cows, one-old wind-broken bovine leeided to lie down and' refused to budge. • Alter an hour or more of hide and
-t'l'k among the govso. with the other ami the u.-.e of a good deal of profanity, on the part of the official and the drover, it was decided to give :n and go back to the pa and tell Hori be could have the cows.
Hold seemed quite unconcerned at ilic news and replied: “Py corry, I know you never take him. Them cows know more about, to gorse than you do. They been here ten year now."
