SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held m the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. E.' Butt) and Crs W. If. Gunning, A. E. Hyde, R. Downes, Jas. Curran jun., and T. C. Thwaites. MAIN HIGHWAYS THROUGH BOROUGHS. Prom the Public Works Department notifying that the Mauin Highways Board has resolved that continuations of Main Highways through borough* Of a population of 6000 and under, shall now become gazetted Main Highways. Gazette notices in connection therewith will be issued shortly. In regard to the borough, advice was also received that the Foxton-Shannon Highwny through the borough will be gazetted via Sheehan Street, so as to coincide with the road deviation caused by the erection of the now Manawatu river bridge. At the present time subsidies on the above Highway are expended in the Borougli on Johnson and Bryce Streets. When Sheehan Street is gazetted d highway, Johnson and Bryce Streets* will bear a subsidy as a detour road until such time as the new road deviation is open for traffic. After that date Highway subsidies on No 59 Highway may be .spent only on Sheehan Street. In regard to No 60 Highway, the streets to lie gazetted •in the Borough are Margaret and Bab lance Streets and Plimmer Terrace. — Received. REMIT APPROVED OF BY COUNCIL The clerk of the Green Island Borough Council forwarded a copy of the following remit which they are forwarding to the annual conference of the Municipal Association of Now Zealand, on Avhieh they asked the Council's attitude: “That the present law relating'to the construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of High ways in the Dominion be amended so as to enable the Main Highways Board to take over and be wholly responsible for the main arterial roads in the Dominion with a view to coping with present. a*nd future traffic requirements. ” Cr. Downes said lie thought the remit was a good one, and if carried would be a great help to small boroughs as there was not the slightest doubt that the through traffic caused trouble, to their roads. The Council, being in accord with Cr. Downes, it was decided to support the remit. MUNICIPAL- CONFERENCE. A copy of the remits to be submitted at the annual conference of the Muni cipal Association of New Zealand to be held at Nelson on March 14th was received. RANGER’S REPORT. The ranger (J. Swindle hurst) report cd having impounded one bull during the past fortnight. TAR-SEALING FOOTPATHS. Cr. Downes, chairman of the Road: Committee, reported' that the work oi tar-sealing thef footpaths in Stout and Venn Streets was going on fairh well. He recommended that if tin. Council could see their way to purchase enough tar to tar-seal the footpath in Stout Street up to the cornei of Vogel Strpet, it would pay tliemtf do it at the present time, otherwise it will become covered with weeds and there will be further expense in getting it weeded and put in ordc: again. The Mayor said it certainly would pay' them, as if it was left it would have to be weeded and kept in ordei for another twelve months.
As it was a question of finance ii was decided on the motion of Or. Downes, seconded by Or. Hyde, “Thai providing arrangements can be made with the Redstar Co., enough tar b( purchased to complete tar-sealing thi footpath in Stout. Street to Vogel Street. ”
It was also resolved on tlie rnotioi. of Cr. Curran, jun., that a truck load of crusher chips be obtained from tin 'Railway Department at Paekakarik, to be used for repairs to footpaths. Cr. Downes pointed out that there are a number of entrances to right-of-ways crossing the footpath in Ballance Street which they arc about t< tar-seal; and he was of opinion that the heavy traffic passing over the path would break it up. Ho suggested that each should have a concrete entrance. He said lie favoured concrete entrances anywhere that there was constant traffic. On his motion the Town Clerk was instructed to interview tin owners of the entrances referred to a* to sharing the cost of putting down -concrete. Attention was also drawn to the fact that the verandah posts of one shop were not in proper line with the kerbing of the footpath and would interfere with the tar-sealing. It was resolved that the owner of the premises be requested to place the posts on the proper line. WATER EXTENSION. It was resolved to. continue the laying of the water main in Dalian ce. Street from the corner of Whittaker Street to the corner of Clapham Street, thus completing the circuit .
