Among those who were successful in passing the matriculation'examination held in December were Vera M. Aim and Selwyn Jones, of Shannon. In the accountants' preliminary examination, H. E. Curran, of Shannon, obtained a full pass.

Local radio listeners have been caused "much annoyance lately by severe interference from a regenerative receiver in the district. Steps have been taken to locate the "howler;" wlvose attempts to tune-in make it quite obvious'that he is ignorant of the proper use of his set, or that he is allowing some one who is not proficient to misuse it. -

In recognition of the services rendered by the Shannon Fire Brigade at the recent outbreak of fire at the rear of his premises, Mr J. V. Bums has donated to the brigade a small hose and couplings which can be attached to a hydrant to deal with outbreaks of fire in a room or under counters, thus minimising damage by Avater. The hose will be very useful and Mr Burns thoughtful action is much appreciated by the Brigade, who. accorded -him a hearty vote of thanks at last night's meeting.. t

On the information of the Shannon police, Richard Southern was charged at the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North, yesterday, before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., with having driven a' motor car across -the intersection of BaHance Street and Plimmer Terrace in a manner that was dangerous to the public. Defendant pleaded guilty by letter, his offence having consisted of driving round the wrong side of the "silent policeman," and he was fined £l, with costs 10s.

At present the Shannon Fire Brigade are using the shed at the rear of the Bank of New Zealand for housing their reel, etc., and with a view to having their, own reel house and meeting room they have tendered for the building at Mangahao known as the Staff bach. The building, which is about 30 x 12, wiil be available for removal in about a month's time and if they are successful in securing it, a working' bee of members will journey to Mangahao to dismantle the building for removal into Shannon.

We are informed by a farmer at Makerua, that pukekos are at present very numerous in the Makerua swamp and are making themselves a niusance. He states that since they have become so plentiful he has discovered they are very partial to eggs. He has a large number of ducks running loose, and the pukekos are robbing him of the eggs. He reported the matter to the Acclimatisation Society and one of their inspectors paid a visit, but strange to relate at the time the birds were missing. Later the farmer in question showed the inspector the birds' camp-' ing ground and following this up and entering another portion of the swamp the birds were to be seen in hundreds. The inspector shot several and the farmer has been granted a permit for six weeks to shoot the birds.

Shannon residents are keen buyers and know when a good bargain is offered to them; hence the rush for frocks oil Saturday, the opening day of Howard Andrew's sale. These were sold at half price—all this season's goods. There are some very smart ones left and these will go at the same price. All the new millinery is to be cleared at half price as well. A good line of boys' shirts suitable for school are to be cleared at from 3/6.*
