Shannon News FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1927.

continued spell of dry weat-he has caused many who are still depend ing on tanks for their water supply t obtain water from those who are con nected up with the borough supply.

Mr M. iFtzger'ald and his daughter, Miss Ethel Fitzgerald, who now deside at Whangamomona, are on a visit to

friends in Shannon. Mr, Fitzgora: intends visiting the South Island b> fore return i tig home.

In accordance with its custom in the past, the Ilorowhenua County Council, on Saturday, in response to an application by Mrs E. England, of Wellington, for a grant for the .Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Society voted the sum of £2 2s.

The increased petrol prices resultant from the Government tax were notified to the Horowhenua Power Board this morning by a supply company. The impost is a uniform sum of 4d a gallon on motor spirt, benzoline and aviation spirt, but does not apply to kerosene and mineral turpentine. The information was received without comment.

“Will we leave the Mangahao road 'as it is,” asked Cr. Barber, at, the County Council meeting on Saturday, when the roads to be recommended as subsidiary highways, were considered. The chairman said he presumed that the Public Works Department would always contribute something towards that road; but the Government might say that the Council must take over the maintenance.

The Horowhenua County Council on Saturday resolved, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Cr. Catley, that in accordance with the provisions of Section 6 of the Eating Act, 1925, an additional charge of 10 per cent. be made on all ra£es unpaid after Tuesday, March 20th, 1928. The chairman remarked that the rates wore not coming in too well. Cr. McLeavey:'“They will come in before that- 10 per cent, goes on.”

The County Council on Saturday received a letter from the Department of Labour asking it to decide the statutory half-holiday for the ensuing year, in the county. In. the event of no notification being forwarded to the Dc partment, the Minister might appoint the half-holiday, the general practice in such a case being to re-establish the day that was already being observed. The letter was formally received, the effect of this action being to leave the half-holiday as at present.

“Riding requirements,” which are enumerated by members of the Horowhenua County Council when the Engineer's report is being read, did not bulk largely at the meeting on Saturday. The most pressing one was that mentioned by Cr. Barber, who said that the roads were being affected by the dry weather and he would like to see rain in the northern end of the County. Unfortunately this' was not one of the requirements which it was in the Council’s power to grant.

Even though asphalt roads may sweat in the hot weather, their superiority over plain metalled highways is unquestionable. The condition of the later, on account of the dry spell, is rapidly going from bad to worse in the northern parts of the district, and an early fall of rain would be a veritable blessing. jDetcrioration of the metal surface is particularly noticeable between the Wirokino bridge and Foxton, in the Manawatu County. A Levin motorist broke several leaves of his car springs in negotiating that length yesterday.
