REVIEW OF HOLIDAY RACING.
FOXTON ■ RACES. OPENING DAY—TO-MORROW. (By “Silken Rein.”) The Foxton Racing Club’s annual two day meeting which is scheduled to take place to-morrow and Monday will, no.doubt, attract a large number of the sporting public of this district. The acceptances are remarkably good when taking into consideration that the Trentham meeting falls on the same day, and the various events to be run off will provide plenty of interest. The Novice Stakes has drawn the biggest field with nineteen-fully paid up while the open six has the small field of six due to start,. POROUTAWHAO BACK HURDLES, of 150 sovs. One mile and five
The meeting will open with the hurdles, which is scheduled to start at 11.45 a.in. Of the seven engaged Polyphemus has shown the best form .while Kilburn has consistently run into minor places. Birkic is a new one over the sticks and if he jumps well will take a lot of heading. The trio mentioned will find most favour with speculators. NOVICE STAKES, of 100 sovs., for
two-year-olds and upwards. Spec ial weights. Six furlongs. Bione Land Rent Braeberry (imp,) Maranga Cavity Royal Black Oloyne Rash Dreamy Red Bank Discourse Service Fortalice ' Shining Star Golden Shadow ( Warfille Ironic War Wings Lady Raven
This event has drawn a good fitdd and punters will have no end of difficulty in sorting out the winner. Royal Black is a useful sort while a win for both Land Rent and Shining Star is over due. The locally-owned Cavity, n youngster showing great promise, is having his fiyst. race and will probably lack support on account, of his inexperience. Newcomers, however, have unknown qualities so far as the public are concerned. Trainer F. Carmont’s chestnut filly, Discourse, will have a run on her home course and in view of recent, performances will have many admirers. Cloyne, Discourse and' Shining Star will probably find the favourite, but Cavity is a sort likely to upset calculations.
FOXTON CUP (Open), of 300 sovs. One miles and a-quartcr.
The principal race promises a field of eight with Royal Game conceding a stone to Kilmiss next on the list. The Royal Stag gelding has shown that lie needs a race to put him right as he has a happy knack of turning up on the second day. Henna is nicely placed at 7.7 and her recent creditable showing will result in the Kilbroney mare being accorded most support. Bent is reported in great order and she likes the course while Our Jack is showing form. A pair that should race wnh distinction are Henna and Bent. HIMATANGI HACK HANDICAP, of 120 sovs. Six furlongs. Vigilance 0 0 White Bing-
I-lolus Bolus scored at Wairarapa and will in consequence not lack support. Lin Aldington has accepted for two races and coming to form should He prominent in which ever event he starts in. Lady Cynthia is a useful sort who with Green Acre and Borsalene should fight out, a good finish. AWAI-lOU HACK HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. Seven furlongs.
Volplane, a recent winner, shoub. vun prominently', while another likely sort will be found in Twink. Blake money' has been long overdue in coming to Inoe, who has every' chance of scoring at this meeting. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP (open).
Practically all the runners engaged in this race have won some part of a stake during the last month, and ai-
though there are only six due to start, the winner is well concealed. Vast Acre and Epistle have not yet, met to try conclusions and will' have'\ an. opportunity to dp so, in this event, but at. the weights Miss Pat is one likely, to have a bay in J,he matter.
MAROTIEI HACK HANDICAP, of 110 so vs. Five and a-half furlongs.
Of the nine engaged the top-weight Helot is will appeal but Little and Clird Trick are a useful pair that are worthy of consideration. lIEItRiNGTON HANDICAP (open),
The conelading event of the first day lias a useful performer in ' Bonogne, while Whcnuanui and Othou should race with prominence. i
WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING
PROSPECTS FOR OPENING DAY.
; Tlui Wellington Racing Club’s Summer, mooting, will lie held on the Tfenthai'n Racecourse on 'Saturday (to-mor-row), Monday and Wednesday and:,the acceptances for the opening day are remarkably good. I’uiiters are presented with a rare puzzle to sort the prospective winners ami'Some very interesting and excellent, racing should result. Some of New Zealaudis best performers are engaged, and this fact alone will attract a large number of .those interested in the sport, itself, to witness the racing. The .principal evij(nt, the Wellington cup of 1500 sovs., has'drawn a field, of nineteen while the second leg, the Telegraph Handicap of 1000 sovs. has no less than twenty-two. The winners of the double last year were both outsiders . 1 Trentham Highweight Handicap. The meeting will, open with the Trentham Highweight for which eleven have fully paid up. At the Wairarapa meeting both the top-weights Mandarine- and Rotowliero raced with success but with the same weights alloted each, the latter will appeal most. First, Sight and Airtight are a useful pailwhile Historic is treated well with 9.0. A ti-io that, should make a good showing are Rotowliero, First Sight *4nd Flying Shot. Wellington Stakes.
A great deal of interest is being taken in this race for two and tjivce-year-olds. Earlier in the season 'Childsplay was considered the champion two-year-oirl of the Dominion, but, calculations were upset when she went down to Staghunter. 'Staghunter was then in favour only to be beaten by an outsider in Prince Humphrey, the defeat certainly being no disgrace, as the. latter is of high quality. All three are engaged in the Stakes. -Apart from flie fact that there, are several othef improving youngsters running, for instance, Silverpaper, Silvonnine, Gascony and Paganelli, on recent form one cannot go past the firsjfc mentioned trio Staghunter, Cliildsplay*and Prince "Humphrey. . Apprentices’ Plate.
Nineteen - runners are due to face the starter in the Apprentices’ plate of sevon furlongs. Lady Limond will conn in for a good share of support, in view of her easy win atManawatu. Ariki wai and Some Lad are • both , usefk workers, while Blimp lias shown a pa i; tieular liking for ,-ttle course. ... Goshawk will have many admirers. Arikiwai, Lady Limond and The Swell are a trio that should perform well.
Fitzherbert Handicap. The five furlong race promises a field of twenty-seven-and unless there are a certain number of withdrawals' a dir ' i si-on may result: No end of possibi!' ties are presented when looking ovi; the list, but the public, will probald; pin their faith on recent winners lit High Disdain and Briar Boot. If fh Gasbag-gelding. Moorgas, is. well lie will take a lot of .beating, while Cmsent who,was deprived of a victory o', account of loosing a saddle-hag in .- recent race will have to be considered Wellington Cup. Nineteen are due to go to Hie post u the principal event in, which the veteran Star Stranger has earnt his posi lion as top-weight with 9.8. Piuthan struck form at this'period last season and is again reported in tip-top order. She is freely nominated as the mos ; likely one and when the machine open; will probably wind up favourite. Mask scored at the Auckland Christina; meeting, and although going well is preferred over a shorter distance. Set Sail, winner of the Inveieargil cup', will be much in demand. AV.hen she rvon that event she, had 9.6 up over one and a quarter miles and is in tomorrow at 8.3. Taking weights and limes into consideration the mare’s prospects look particularly bright. Laughing Prince won a mile race on the first day at Auckland and over a mile and a half, ran second to that, champion throe-year-old Martarina. .Toy Bird beat Piuth'air by half a length'in the Manawatu Cup with 4 ibs less.-The difference between the weights allotted this pair is now 5 1!>. Of the four races that Battlement had at Auckland, he ran tlirid and’ three- fourths, and in the humour with a little luck should got nearer this . time. David Garrick won the principal event onthe second dqy at Woodville, while Taranaki sportsmen had every confidence in their candidate, Bright Glow, rvlio acemthted for the Stratford Cup. He has since been scratched for this race. Papal u* beat all but Star Stranger in the A.R.C. handicap of one and a half miles while Bdnnanee was half a .length bphind, third, in the same race. Both
should run well. Novar who, with 7.2, did the mile and a quarter at Awapuni.in 2 min. 0 sec.,, must not be overlooked. In the seven stone sect- . ion, quite a number of South Island hors.es are liltely to! run well particularly' Overhaul, who has W'on a surpris- ’ ingiy large number of good races, as J recently as January 2, when the Trac-' j tor gelding won the Wyndham cup with B.2jup. In at the minimum he is treated very leniently and South Island j sportsmen are of the opinion that his i capabilities have been under-estimated, j After a survey is made and certain | items taken into consideration, a’con- ! elusion is arrived at that a trio _most . likely to keep the rest of the field busy arc: — Piuthair Set Sail and Battlement. If the winner- is to come from the lightweights Overhaul or Papatu will be considered best. Anniversary Handicap. ' \
Eighteen have accepted for»the one mile race, the best of which with recent performances is Thorudale. He will, however,' havij to be in the best of order to head the restjof- the field. Nincompoop generally be satisfied with minor plaeings, but will spare no effort to get in the money on this Occasion. Providing ‘a light-weight can be found for Overhaul lie will .most likely fulfill liis* previous engagement. A good sort will be found in Damans who is showing a return of form. Sir Eoy : has good credentials as a racer in the South Island, but. whether he is up to the class is not known. Ring Boy, Gala/Day and Iloromea are all a likely sort, while Duke Abbey is fast enough to suggest, he will take a lot; of beating.. There arc many possibilities. A trio that, deserve consideration are Nincompoop, ' Damans and ' Duke Abbey.' Telegraph Handicap.
The field of twenty-two accepted ‘for the second big--event are a first class lot and with several about on a par so far as, performances are; concerned, the majority of those who sort out the. winner will be blessed more with good luck -than good judgment, though perhaps it will not be admitted. Aussie has been allotted 9.7 and though the good 4-year-old that he is, , has a hard task set him. The question is ‘.‘can he concede as much as 2.7 to that -South Island runner Good as Gold - who is no ‘dud’ ”, apart from the fact that a pound or two is hardly worth ; consideration over six furlongs. Two good races, however,-, came his way at - Auckland, going to show that he is at his very best and this will not be forgotten.- The Hawk will not be mticli in favour as lie has, not shown up lately. Cimabue ran first and fourth at Auckland in three starts, while Crown Area is hot slow. Eulalie is ready and ■ will have plenty of admirers. Booster won this event- last year with 7.7 up and an extra eleven pounds should not , worry’the Solferino gelding who is now In his best form. Auckland running credits Money Order 'with a first and third, In the Shade third, .Royal Dam,n fourth and Rapcrebase 1 . a second, third and fourth. - All are much ran-.-ied. Lausanne is doing good work and in the mood would make a bold aid to get among the-winners. When : immned up, a trio that should be among the front rankers are: — Booster. Cimabue and • Eulalie. * • Ruapehu Handicap. . • • South Island horses have beeft. freely nominated in practically every race • and it will cause no surprise to find a large proportion of stake -money go in that direction. Camisader, Erin-go-Bragh and Broustell are all a useful . ot from the South .with recent wins o their credit.. The Raider, is at pro- - - lent in the best of order and will be ; Pound one of the hardest to beat. Of rbe others Polydectes is liked best while there is a possibility in Dainty Ways or Mandy. The Raider, Polydectes & or Broustell should -find- the 'favourite.
