SUPERSESSION OF THE HORSE
When the cost of licensing commercial vehicles was so greatly increased it was freely stated by many persons who did not realise the importance and potentialities of the motor vehicle used in (he conveyance of goods or passengers that there would be in many instances, reverfions to the employment of horsed vehicles. The ‘Commercial Motor’ poin'ed out-at the time that such a procedure, if carried out to any great extent, would render the problems of ransport by road far more difficult than they are at the moment, and they strongly urged that, wherever ’possible, horse transport should not be used,, for it is one of the prime
facors in can .sing' road congestion, partially by its iniiial low spi ed, and partially because the horsed vehicle, instead ol‘ being lupi to the kerb, usually occupies far more than, ihs lair share of the road. It actually puts forward a strong plea that the horse should be eliminated altogether so tar as road transport in congested areas is concerned, and pointed out that pu.te apart from i's unsatisfactory capabilities in th e direction of speed its factor of occupation of road spue, is many lime:; 'greater than that of, the motor vehicle. It is now apparent that users of motor, vehicles have d.-cided not to rc-vert to houses., and
in fact, many owners of horses arc
now selling them so' that commercial motors can bo brought into service•hnly a few day- ago a leading London conTactor mold every horse, van. and set of harness, while “replacing • by Tors" was the reason given recent 'y for (Tv. sale of if- horsed equipment by ri firm of mineral water manufacturers.
