SUNDAY LORRY TRAFFIC.
NOT COMMON IN HOROWHENUA. According to statements made at Saturday's meeting of the Ilorowhenua County Council little use is made of the roads on Sundays by transport lorries. The District Engineer of the Public Works Department wrote: "1 have been informed thai, now the wool season has started, motor lorries in the Manawatu district and elsewhere are doing a lot of Sunday trading, much to the annoyance of the local bodies concerned and to the (ravelling public. If your Council wish to have this practice stopped they may do so as Sunday trading is an offence in Section 4 of the Police Offences Amendment Act. 1924." The section of the Act referred to imposes a fine of £5 .upon any person who on Sundays in or in view of any public place works at his trade or calling. The Minister of .Railways, however, may exempt railway bookstall employees from the operation of the Act, while persons engaged in driving public or private vehicles in connection with the trains and in running the trains are exempt from the penalties prescribed. The chairman said he was not on the main roads on Sunday sufficiently to say whether the ]orry traffic was a nuisance or not. It did not look well for local bodies to lay down a hard and fast rule on the subject and unless it became an absolute menace they should leave the matter where it was. Or. Bryant said he was on the road a good deal on Sundays and it was a : very rare thing to see a lorry. i
The letter was received and no action was taken.
