BOWLING.
MANSON AND BARR CUP. The holders of the Manson and Barr Cup -(H.. Butt, A. T. White, W, 11. Gunning and J. Gagliardi, skip) unsuccessfully defended a challenge at Shannon on Saturday by a rink from Eketahuna, consisting of W. Hooper, J. Amundsen, H. Sternberg and W. Hornblow (skip) . The challengers won the first head, opening their account with a three, and secured the next two heads with a one and a two. At the eighth head the score was 9 to 5 in favour of the visitors. The next five heads went to them making their score 15 to 5. With thirteen heads gone things looked bad for the holders. However, at this point they took a fresh lease of life and set out to make up the difference. With six up in the 18th and a four in the 19th, the score at the start of the final head was Eketahuna 22 Shannon 18, the holders thus having to score four to retain the trophy. They made a big bid for victory and when the visiting skip went .to play his last bowl they were lying four up, the -required number. But a well judged bowl carried the kitty, which gave the holders only one up, and the trophy thus went to the challengers, the final score being 22 to 19.
At the conclusion of the game Mr. J. Gagliardi in handing over the trophy to Mr. Hornblow (skip), of the Eketahuna rink/congratulated him ,0n their victory, expressing the hope that they would be able to hold it until Shannon could meet them again. Mr. Hornblow returned thanks on behalf of his rink, expressing pleasure at the hospitable manner in which they had ben received.
