ALLEGED ESCAPE.
FROM POINT HALSWELL. GIRLS TO SERVE THREE MONTHS EXTRA. •Ruby Bulliffe, alias Hudson, aged 19 1 vosrs, and Dulcie Milieu Turnbull, aged 1&-, appeared at the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North on Wednesday, before' Mr J, L. Stout, S.M., charged with being incorrigible rogues in that they escaped'from an iustitu- 1 tiou before the expiration of the term for which tliev were committed.'
They were further charged with stealing at Shannon, on November 1, an attache case, 200 cigarettes and a cardigan jacket, of a total value of £3 7s (id, the property of a Chinese fruiterer, Jhing Lee.
It is alleged that the two girls escaped from Point Halswell on Sunday afternoon by climbing over the Avail; that one of them crawled for three miles on her stoipach and thereafter by alternately riding and walking reached Shannon with her companion. At Shannon, it is further alleged, one girl engaged the Chinese at the front while the other went to" the back of his premises and committed the theft. They then eauglit a bus and came on to Palmerston North. Walking through the subway Detective Barling recognised Dulcie Turnbull from an Auckland af fair,- and, being suspicious, apprehended the pair. When they were charged Senior-Ser-geant O’Gradv asked for a remand t.i Wellington till the next day, the re maud being granted “There is no doubt about" their ''being incorrigible rogues, but I could , use a far stronger term for them,” he added. Bulliffe and Turnbull came before Mr Riddell, SIM., in Wellington' yesterday, when sub-inspector Harvey stated that Buiift'e was undergoing two years’ Borstal treatment for a breach of her probation, while Turnbull was in April last sentenced to twelve pionths’ for being an idle and disorderly person'. All the stolen property lud been recovered.
A matron front Point Halswell stated that since the girls liad|beeu at the institution both had been of good conduct. “If you girls go on and act as you are doing,!’ remarked the Magistrate, “you will only have your term increased; It is foolish, for you Avill not gain anything' by it. If you run away you will be caught, because you can’t get very far. Last Sunday you escaped, but you Avere .soon run to earth again. You have been, placed in this institution for your oavu benefit, to try and improve your conduct, if possible,, but. if you escape you are deemed to be an incorrigible rogue, forVAvhicli you can get tAvelve months in gaol, which Avill be‘worse than remaining at Point HalsAvell, Avhere you are very well looked after. ” ,
His Worship Avent on to tell the girls that it AA\as iu their interests to remain Avliere they Avere until their sentence expired. They Avere not the only ones that had nut aAvay, or the only ones that, had been caught. The others had been sentenced to an extra term, and the same course would iaoav hewe to be adopted. “You Avant to exercise your 'common-sense,'” advised Mr Riddell; “at least what, conunonseuse you have, for it is for' your advantage. Otherwise you will lie getting sent to gaol. ” - '
Both accused wore ordered to be detained at Point Halswell for an extra three months after the expiration of the terms they were now serving. On the charge of theft they were convicted’ and ordered to come up for sentence"* when called upon.
