Entries for the Shannon Bowling Club’s pairs and singles championships close on Saturday, November sth.
Mr Alec C. Anderson, the local buyer for the Kiwi Bacon Company, will be in. Shannon on Thursday next for the purpose of trucking pigs.
The roads in the vicinty of Shannon are at present in a very bad state, especially going north as far as Tokomaru. Motorists are making many complaints and consider that the lloiowhenua County Council is not giving the road the attention it should.
Messrs J. Gagliardi and K. Logan, of Mangaore, who left on Friday last for a motor tour, returned home on Tuesday after covering a distance of 800 miles by car. Places of interest visited were Napier, Wairoa, Lake House, Waikdremoana, Hot Springs. Morere, and Waikokopu.
The final of the 1927 Mangaore ping pong championship will be decided this evening, the contestants being D. Jamieson (scr.), winner of section “A”, and B. M. Chrystall (4), winuer of section “B”. Mr, Jamieson is the holder of the title.
A fine sight that will appeal to amateur gardeners is the Chinese gardens in Margaret Street on the borough boundary, where there is to be seen, a great variety of vegetables, all in, a very forward condition, going to show the* adaptability of the Shannon soil and climate for market gardening.
A final reminder is given that the dance organised by the committee of the Women’s Institute in aid of a local family in distress will be held in the Parish Hall to-morrow evening. A good time is assured those who attend and as the cause is a most deserving one, it is to be hoped the promoters will be rewarded with a bumper attendance .
The Shannon Football Club’s victory dance will be held this- evening in the Druids’ Hall. The committee have done all possible to ensure patrons spending an enjoyable time, therefore it is hoped there will be a good attendance. Opportunity will also be taken to present the Nash Cup and the gold medal awarded to ' the most improved player, during the past season, which was won by H. Walls.
On Wednesday evening, the 19th instant, the fourth series of card tournaments was held by the Mangaore social club. Euchre was the order of the evening and the winners turned out to be: Gents, Mr. W. S. Dennis; Ladies, Miss L. Astwood. Booby Prizes: Gents, Mr. A. G. Breen; Ladies, Mrs J. Ostler. Sumptuous supper av.ms served by the ladies.
Under the auspices of the Mangaore Literary and Debating Club, a social and dance was held on Wednesday evening last. The evening was enjoyed by all and musical items were rendered by Mesdames Cronquest and Gregory and Messrs Cronquest and Owen. Mrs Butler of Shannon supplied the music and M.C. duties were in the hands of Mr. A. S. Coates.
A children’s party as a wind-up to the concert given by them in aid of Yen. Bede’s Church was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening. After a sit-down tea, which was done full justice to, the evening was devoted to musical and vocal items, dancing and games, the little ones thoroughly enjoying themselves. The prize given to the child selling the most tickets for the concert, won by Joan Bovis, was also presented.
The following grants for the Horowhenua County appear in the Public Works Estimates: —Ohau West Road extension (£ for £), £250; Otaki Gorge (north bank) (£ for £), £300; Waikawa Beach Road extension (£ for £), £2OO.
The Christchurch City Council has approved of the report of the engineer proposing to spend £1,370,000 on improvements to the city roads and bridges.
A remarkably shooting performance was witnessed at a recent match in the series held by the Levin Defenco Rifle Club/when Company Sergt.-Ma-jor Ray Tantrum scored 10 bull’s-eyes with 10 successive shots at 500 yards. Mr Tantrum held the New Zealand Territorial rifle champions! p in 1925.
Mr Moss Davis, now in England, has donated to Auckland what Mayor Baildon describes as one of the most magnificent gifts the city has ever received in priceless statuary, which arrived at Wellington by the Corinthic -yesterday.
The Foxton District High School reopened on Tuesday morning. There were 206 absentees, including two teachers. As soon as the weather clears it is hoped that the attendance will become normal.
It is probable' that a general discussion will take place between the flaxmillers and the Department of Agriculture at an early date in reference ,to the recent gradings. It is believed that the standard fixed is too high.
At the Foxton Police Court Tuesday morning, before Messrs F. Robinson and A. Fraser, J.’sP., a farme?, of Himatangi, was charged with being intoxi- i cated while in charge of a mbtor vehicle on the Foxton raceeouse on Monday. Accused pleaded guilty and stated that for two days he had' been confined to his bed with influenza, but got up to go to the motor sports. Before doing so he fortified himself with “four good stiff rums.” He was not accustomed to drink and “rum was a stiff drink for a man who drank only once in a blue moon.” He said he realised the seriouesness of the affair and it would be a lesson to him. He would be indebted to the Bench if they would take a lenient view of the case as he had a business prestige to maintain. The Bench said they would take a lenient view and accused would be convicted and fined £lO, in default one month’s imprisonment. Accused asked that liis name be suppressed. The Bench was not sure whether Justices were empowered to suppress names in such charges, but an instruction was given to the Press that they did not desire the name to be published.
