Mr and Mrs Jas Murray, of Feathers ton were in Shannon over the week end visiting friends. They returned to their home yesterday afternoon.

The friends of Miss Mary Cameron, of Levin, who for many years resided in Shannon, will be sorry to learn that she has been compelled to enter a hospital in Palmerston North to undergo an operation. AH will join in wishing her a speedy recovery.

In our report of the children's con cert in Friday's issue, a dance by little Rona Radford and a recitation by George Radford were inadvertently omitted from the programme published. Each performer received a good reception.

The Commissioner of Taxes draws the attention of taxpayers to the notification appearing in to-day's issue that the due date of payment of Land-tax. for the current year is on Monday, the 7th day of November, 11)27, and that the-demands will be posted on or about the 31st day of October.

All members of the Choral Society are asked to be present at the next practice as rehearsal for the next concert will start in earnest, the time being short. There are still a number of books out or "Merrie England," and members are asked to return these at once. The financial position of the society will be placed before the members next week by the secretary.

A dance lias been organised by the committee of the Women's Institute to raise funds to assist a local family who are in .urgent need of financial assistance. The dance will be held in the Parish Hall.on Saturday evening, and it is hoped the public will- attend in large numbers as the cause is :■ mo.*t deserving one. Members of the [nstitute are asked to kindly bring a plate.

At the conclusion of the morning'service on Sunday at the Catholic Church, Shannon, opportunity was taken by the congregation to bid farewell to Air M. Fitzgerald and Miss Ethel Fitzgerald, who left Shannon yesterday morning to take up their residence at Whangamomona. Both have been zealous workers of the church, Mr Fitzgerald having been chairman of- the church committee for the past seven years, in which position he has rendered invalu able service, while Miss Fitzgerald has always been one of the most value,! helpers in any functions connected with the church. On behalf of the congregation Rev. Father MeDermott, in presenting Mr Fitzgerald with a beautiful travelling rug and Miss Fitzgerald with a white ebony toilet set, made eulogistic reference to the splendid work they bad done in .the interests of the church He expressed the regret of all at their departure, but wished them every hap piness and prosperity in their new home

When passing another ear on the Ihakara Top on Saturday, a sedan car 'was overturned through striking loose gravel and catching the force of the gale. The driver was bruised and shaken, and sustained a nasty cut on one of his hands.

Norman Cohen and Thelma Levy, of Sydney, who, while en route to Vancouver by the Niagara, overstayed when they went ashore on October 7 and applied the following day foii permission to travel via San Francisco to Vancouver, but were arrested and detained under bond, have appealed to Washington, alleging high-handed treatment from immigration officials, who, they say, placed the worst posible complexion on the facts of their case.

The amount placed on. the Public Works Estimates for the Levin-Palmev-ston North main highway (via Shannon) is £3OOO, by way of £1 f oi» £1 subsidy. Last year £12,525 was voted, or' which £5782 was expended. The vote for the Foxton-Shannon highway this year is £23,522, representing the cost of the new Manawatu river bridge, of which £10,274 is recoverable from the local authorities interested—the Horowhenua and Manawatu County Councils, and the Shannon and Foxton Borough Councils.
