OPENING OF TENNIS SEASON.

The official opening of the Shannon Tennis Club's season took place on the courts in Vance Street on Saturday afternoon. Although the weather was dull there was a good attendance of members and their friends, representatives from the Mangaore Club also being present. A number of games were playfid and a most pleasant afternoon was spent. During the afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies and much appreciated. Mr E. T. Moody, president of the Club, in declaring the courts opened, extended a hearty welcome to all, wishing them a pleasant afternoon's sport. He stated that the Club was in a good financial position. A number of improvements had been carried out on the courts; and the club would not have any call on it for some time. He asked members to roll up and thus help the club along in the fixtures, as last season there was not the interest shown that he would have liked to see. He referred to the great loss to the club by the death of Mrs Lauryig, who had been such a great help to the club, especially to the younger members. For the coming season trophies had been donated by Messrs H. Hook and ,6. Mitchell, which he hoped would be keenly competed for. After thanking the ladic.3 for providing refreshments during the past season, in the absence of Mrs Moody he called on Mrs Merwood to play the first ball over the net, after winch he declared the season open.
