THEFT OF A LETTER
MONEY BY FALSE PRETENCES. x
Some time ago a professional man in Wanganui received a visitor 'who produced a letter purporting to be an introduction from a friend in the South Island. The visitor, who was a Scotsman, said his wife and were coming out from Scotland and' - that he had a position to go to in Dunedin, but lacked the money to" pay his fare. On the strength of the, letter the Wanganui man paid the man's passage, but communication with his friend in the south revealed the fact that the fellow he had assisted was not the man to whom he had given the letter. By this time the other man had left the city and it is surmised that he had stolen, the letter. The '■ tickets had probably been sold by him to someone else.
Investigations have been made and it is discovered that a man of similar. appearance and with a story almost [■ identical with this approached^two ■ Palmerston North, one at Marton, and a Wanganui resident who was then in Wellington. In this last instance a "■ passage to Christchurch was sought.
