"MERRIE ENGLAND."
NEXT THURSDAY'S PRODUCTION. Everything points to a satisfying presentation of Edward German's tuneful light opera "Merrie England" by Shannon Choral Society next Thursday evening. The Society is in good form and the soloists are all of high quality. Reference was made to Miss Norah Greene in last issue. Miss Naomi Whalley (soprano) has won golden opinions wherever she has sung. A perusal of the press notices of her appearances in Palmerston, Napier, Auckland, Wellington, and Levin reveal her as a young artist who has speedily won a place amongst the vocalists of the Dominion. Mr. J. Garde Grimshaw is the tenor and he is a singer of mature powers and fine talents. The bass and baritone parts will be. taken by Messrs F. C. Lemmon and J. 1). Brown, both of whom sung ■in ''Merrie England" at Levin with much acceptance.
A number of visitors from Levin will attend the production, which is arous■ig a good deal of interest in musical : ircles within reach of Shannon.
A very good rehearsal was held last week by the Choral Society, when there was a very full choir, finishing touches being made. A final rehearsal takes place to-morrow night in the theatre, when doubtless every member will be present.
As it is impossible to reserve seats u Thursday next, ticket holders will nave the preference from 7.15 till 7.45. After that time the theatre will be jpvii to all. The concert will start at ■> p.m. sharp.
