• The hope that within the next two or three years only New* Zealand coal would be used on Government railways was expressed by Mr. Coates in a speech last week in connection with the Raglan by-election campaign. The quantity of New Zealand coal used or, the railways live years ago was prac tically negligible, he said, most of the supplies coming from Newcastle ami some from Wales. Investigations hat: shown that more local coal could be 'used, and the quantity to-day was seventy per cent. The lighter New Zealand coals presented difficulties in dry periods, but the services of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research had been requisitioned in an endeavour to. improve this percentage still further.
