NORFOL ISLAND.
FRUIT TRADE PROSPECTS. LACK OF SHIPPING.
In five years’ time large quantities of bananas will be coming from Norfolk Islands.
That (says the Auckland Sun) is the opinion of Mr. Harvey Turner, who returned to Auckland on by the Hinemoa.
Like all other visitors to Norfolk, Mr. Turner is enthusiastic" about the charms and the beauty of Norfolk. “It is a wonderful place, with a wonderful climate,” he says. Although bananas are being grown only in comparatively small quantities on Norfolk at present, the residents have begun planting seriously, and at the end of five years large quantities should be shipped from the island. “The growers there are netting the best part of £1 a case, and if they send away 20 cases a week they, are doing well,” said Mr. He also remarked that a quantity of bananas find their way to the Sydney markets. Mr. Turner says' that Norfolk is a wonderful island for fruit. -Wild peaehes grow’ in any quantity. The island is only semi-tropical, and. will grow, almost anything. _ Ho remarked that the facilities for shipping are not good. With the plantations in full swing, and two boats plying between New Zealand and the island, trade would increase considerably., {This will -goimfcj i){ .time, he thinks.
Thei fact that there are no motor cars on Norfolk is not the fault of the residents. It is mainly due to the tourists, who foster the tradition that the island would be spoiled of some of its beauty if motor cars were, allowed to be imported wholesale. . The islanders were very excited about the prospect of the flight from Australia and New Zealand, and the fact that Flight-Lieutenant Freweh was to land on Norfolk. When Mr. Turner left they had not received the news that the flight had been abandoned.
