TROUT-FISHING SEASON
AN AUSPICIOUS OPENINO. The 1927-28 fishing season, which opened on Saturday, will be one of the best on record in this district. The rivers are liberally stocked with trout, . and licenses are selling freely. The week-end weather was admirable, and good sport was enjoyed all though the district. At Waikanae, one observer says, [here must have been half the rods of Wellington in use yesterday, dozens ofanglers working the stream. All who were interviewed had caught fish. A Levin man during an hour caught five, the best of which weighed about 2£ lbs He describes the stream as teeming with trout. The Pahaatanui stream also provided good fishing, a catch of 17 being reported from there. Some big catches were made in the Otaki river, two anglers returning with .*
18 and 3 3 respectively from the lower reaches. The fish weighed up to 4 lbs and were of excellent quality. - Five large trout were also reported to have been taken from the upper reaches of the Otaki.
In the Manakau territory, a catch of 11 -was made in the Waikawa on Saturday, the best weighing about 2 lbs. Good sport was expected in the Ohau river, and the anticipations were realised. Among the bags were a dozen on Saturday and a catch of nine yesterday
Shannon is also proving a favourable centre, to work from, and the catches include 13 by a couple of boys fishing in the Mangaore. stream. The progressive policy of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society is meeting with gratifying results, and all the indications point to a boom in the river sport this season.
