BENEFIT FOR JACOB.
MANAWHENTJA REP. MATCH IN WM ' LEVIN. - ■ INJURY will terminate popui . LAR SKIPPER'S FOOTBALL
If - CAREER. V The accident which happened to Harry Jacob, the popular All Black and r, captain of Wanderers Club, on Saturi‘, day, is likely to incapacitate him from active participation in football for the future. This news will be received .> with nothing short of dismay by all ’■ supporters of Rugby; but the injury .' ‘ - which Jacob sustained is a serious one , ' —rupture that will require careful attention. Consequently, in the coming \ summer and autumn he will be debarf red from his seasonal occupation, the f nature of which has hitherto left him V free to take a prominent place in the i-~ national sport during the winter. He v is also interested in a farm and is a j ■ husband and father, and these circumw stances have actuated those controlling ■ football in the combined districts of r . Horowhenua and Manawatu to arrange > a benefit match between their respec- ' tive rep. teams, to be played on the Levin Domain on Saturday next. • The matter was dealt with at an informal meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Council management committee T in the Wistaria rooms last evening, those present being Messrs J. J. O’Connor (president), W. N. Anderson, M. Ryder, M, Winiata, and J. W. Rimmer. The position was explained by Mr Anderson, who stated that in Palmersv ton that day Mr A. M. Ongley, president of the Manawatu Council and the y. combined Union, approached him on r the subject of arranging a benefit for Jacob, and suggested that the Mana- >. watu representatives should play Horowhenua at Levin on Saturday. The P ' speaker interviewed as many, of the *>> members of this Council as he could meet and they all thought the idea a very good one. Mr Ongley believed that for this match a better gate would i' be realised in Levin than in PalmcrsV ton. Each Council would pay the exw penses of its own team. i-. On the motion of Mr Rimmer, seci onded by Mr Anderson, it was decided -■■■ , to accept ,the offer of Manawatu to play a benefit match. Mr Winiata was asked to select the Horoivhenua team V forthwith. Mr Rimmer mentioned that Jacob i would be a great financial sufferer as a result of the mishap, and the development of his farm would be affected. Mr Rimmer thought it might be ad- ’ visable to establish a trust for the ad- :' ministration o.f any funds that might • be raised in this connection. Mr Anderson said that the benefit match should be dealt with in the :: meantime, and the question of further ‘ 1 efforts could be considered at a full meeting of the Council. Mr 0 ’Connor stated that. Jacob’s aceident marked the termination of his r football career. The proceeds of the T proposed match should be used to defray his medical expenses, and later steps could be taken to assist him in , other directions. ' It was resolved that the match take place on the Levin Domain at 2.30 p.m. it ; on Saturday, and that the charges for admission be Is to the ground and 2s to the ground and stand. Tickets will be on sale throughout the district from this afternoon until the time of the match, and it behoves all who have the spirit of the game at heart and a sporting regard for the stalwart Manawhenua captain who is now laid, on a sick-bed to rally to the cause that will see him over his preset ent troubles. I' PALMERSTON’S SUPPORT. 1, At last night’s meeting of the Mana- *• watu District Council, Mr Ongley suggested that it would be a gracious act on the Council’s part if it offered to send a Manawatu team to Levin on Saturday next, there to play a benefit match for Jacob with a Horowiienua - fifteen. Jacob, apart from the fact that he had devoted his time to football to the detriment of his work, had always been a good example to his team and had earned the Council’s gratitude. Mr Ongley’s suggestion was enthusiastically adopted, and when put in the ;/ form of a motion was seconded by Mr J. R. Hardie and carried unanimously-
