AMIABLE STRANGER.

. GIVES A £1571 CHEQUE. YET MAKES A NICE PROFIT. Scotland Yard detectives are search, ing for a trickster whose offers to invest in a sound enterprising business are merely a ruse to relieve business people of their capital. A Portsmouth man who replied to the “financier’s” advertisement received a call from him and an offer to invest £ISOO in his business. An agreement was drawn up and the visitor then produced a cheque for £1571, with a plausible excuse to account for the extra £7l. He was handed a cheque for £7l as his change and made himself 'so agreeable that his victim also handed him five handbags as a present for his wife.

The cheque for £1571 came back from the bank marked “Sigfiature differs.” Nothing more has been heard of the handbags.
