COST AND SCALES OT CONTRIBUTIONS. ; At Monday night's Foxton Borough . Council meeting the following letter was received from the Main Highways Board relative to the new Shannon Bridge: “It is proposed to erect i ne!w ‘ bridge over the Manawatu River on the Foxton-Shannon Main Highway., The estimated cost of the bridge is-' £23,662, of whiich amount the Main' Highways Board will pay £13,442, leav-; ing £10,220 to .be contributed by the local authorities in the following proportions: Shannon Borough Council, l-12tli not exceeding £SSO; Foxton Bor-; ough Council l-12th not exceeding £850; and the balance equally by the Horowhenua and Manawatu County Councils, provided that in the event of the cost of. the bridge exceeding the estimates, two thirds of such, excess shall be paid by the Main Highways Board and the remaining one-third in equal proportions by the Horowdienua and Manawatu County Councils. In addition, it is proposed to construct approach roads. The estimated cost of the road on the Horowhemia. sTAe is £4840, which wd'll be borne in. equal proportions by the Main Highways Board and the Horowlienua County Council, while that on the Manawatu’ side is estimated to cost £2430, to be borne equally by the Manawatu County Council and the board. The Minister, of Public Works w-ill be the constructing authority with respect to the ( bridge and the Horowdienua approach and the Manawatu County Council the authority in connection with its approach. A commencement has already, been made with the reconstruction of the bridge and it is essential, before the work proceeds further, to have anunconditional resolution from the council agreeing to the terms of the above.' ’ The clerk said that he bad w-mtten to the Highways Bortrd requesting that the Foxton Borough Council, as a contributing body to the old bridge, be credited wuth its proportion of the value (one-sixth) of what is left of che structure, but as yet no reply had been received. The council decided to hold the matter over until a reply is received from the board.
