MAIN HIGHWAYS IN THE COUNTY. SUBJECT FOR A SPECIAL COMMITTEE. The Main HighAvays scheme in the Ilorowhenua County, whieh has been repeatedly criticised in the Council, is to form the subject of a comprehensive inquiry by a special committee, Avhich was set up at Saturday’s meeting. “We have got to. take stock as far as our Main Higlnvay work is concerned,” said the chairman (Mr G. A. Monk), “aqd it is best for a committee to report to the next meeting of the Works Committee.” In the report of the Works Committee there Avas a recommendation that the Engineer be instructed to supply the committee at their next meeting with a return of Main HighAvav construction costs for the month, including shoulde Avork, strengthening, metal- crushing, and delivery. At the chairman’s request, the above recommendation Avas Avithdrawn, and he moved as folloAvs: —“That the chairman and Crs. Ryder, Catley, Barber and Whyte be a special committee to consider the position of main highways expenditure and such other matters as may be deemed expedient in connection thereAvith, and report to the next meeting of the Works Committee.” The motion was seconded by Cr. Catlev and carried Avithout discussion.
