The question of the starting time of the .Shield match against Canterbury came up for discussion, several of the members bringing forward requests from the farming community that the match be started at 2.30 in view of 'he fact that so many cows were coming in, and they desired to get home earlier. It was decided on the motion of Mr. K. W. Eglinton that the game start at 2.30 p.m. The curtain-raiser will therefore begin at 1 pan. instead of at 1.30. Delegates’ Expenses. Mr. J. J. O’Connor (Levin) brought forward the question of the payment of delegates’ expenses to the meetings of the Union. He said that the cost, which was about £4 had to be borne out by the Horowhenua delegates themselves, as the Council refused to pay them. They were transacting business in connection with the Manawhenua Union, and he contended that it was not a matter for the respective councils, but rather a direct charge against the combined union. Ho moved that the tra filing expenses of delegates be paid by the Manawhenua Union, the charges to be retrospective to the beginning of the year, and from centre to centre, the charge on any one occasion not to exceed £4.
.Mr. J. A. Colquhou seconded the mo tion.
In supporting the motion, the president, Mr. A. M. Ongley, said that when the notice of motion was brought forward, he was against it in view of the state of the finances of the Union. Now they were in a much better position, and he would give the matter nis full support.
Other members speaking in favour of the motion it was put to the meeting and carried unanimously. The matter of expenses of d legates incurred in travelling to the assembling place was left to the District Councils. The Secretary’s Salary. The president brought up the question of the secretary’s salary, which he thought should be increased. ? T r. Fraser was an exemplary secretary and he had had a large amount of ex a work in view of the number of representative matches and the holding of the Ranfurly Shield. He moved that the Union pay £25 towards his salary, together with a bonus of £25, a motion which was carried unanimously. Further Rep. Matches.
Particulars of the remaining representative matches were finalised. Messrs. Winiata, Robinson and Ryan were appointed to carry on with the team, while the entertainment of the Canterbury team was left in the hands of Messrs. Onglcy and Hardie, and that of entertaining Otago team in the hands of Messrs. Winiata and O'’Conor at Levin. The charges for the match with Canterbury are to be the same as the previous Shield games, except that children will be admitted for sixpence, flic Railway Department has arranged excursion fares from Wellington-Wan-ganui- Wairarapa-Danncvirke for Wednesday's game against Canterbury. Appreciation of the services of the referees in the matches with Taranaki and Wanganui, Messrs. Sutherland and Clarke, was expressed, a vote of thanks being accorded them. Meeting of Delegates.
A meeting of delegates of both District Councils was arranged for Monday, September 19, at 8 p.m. at Levin. The president pointed out that there were a number of matters which required “ airing " and he thought that the annual meeting was not the pi e to discuss them. He would move that a motion carried at the meeting of the Union on August 14 that the matter referring to the rule relating to the election of officers to the annual meeting be rescinded, and a full meeting of clelegates.be called at an early date to discuss the matter.
The motion being carried, the date above was decided on.
