RUGBY FOOTBALL.

£.. HOROWHENUA DISTRICT. | MEETING OF CONTROLLING f*' ■ BODY. ■- The weeklv meeting of the manage- - ment committee of the Horowhenua '..Bugby District Council was held in the Wistaria rooms last evening, there be- ' ing present; Messrs ~3. J. O'Connor, (chairman), M. Ryder (Wanderers), MI". McDonald (Schools), W. Bobson ;■ (Miranui), T. Wrigley (Kuku), J. W. - Procter (Hui Mai), W. N. Anderson i (County), A. Richards (Shannon), J. 1 W. Rimmer (treasurer), and J. Casey (secretary). Leave of was granted to Messrs W. Neville and S. : Auttin (Foxton). Jt was resolved that all cups and » trophies be engraved at the expense ? 'of the Council, as from 1927. On the motion of Mr. Rimmer, it ; "was resolved to write to the Parapara- -. umu club explaining that they were 1 unfinancial in the Council's insurance - fund. '- ' THE MATCH' AT, MANAKAU. - '< A report on the result of the senior final, in which Hui Mai defeated - County last Saturday, was received ■ from the referee, Mr. J. Seiascia, who congratulated the Hui Mai club on the - way in which they had fenced off the ; "ground and chalked it offff in a proper manner, which helped greatly in the controlling of the game, also of Hie players. -FOXTON THIRD'S COMPLAINT. With reference to the third-grade "'competition, the Foxton club, through ' its secretary, Mr: R. Hornblow, wrote las follows:—"At a special meeting of '; my club last week, I ■ was instructed ■ to* write you protesting against the N treatment meted out to the Foxton "•; thirds during the season—i.e., in refus- «- ing to, allow the match, won by de-l-fault by Weraroa, on July 16th, and Ithe match against Wanderers, played in f Levin, to be re-played.'' The Chairman stated that this mat•;,ter had already been dealt with and |/the championship for the Northern £/Division afvvairded. ;' The final had f-.becn played and won by Paraparaumu. f . The letter was received. KNOCKOUT COMPETITION |; With regard to . the junior knoek- £ out semi-final, which was won by Shannor., but was subsequently awardec. :_by the Council to Weraroa, the referee, '• Mr. C. Coyle, wrote stating that the 1. Weraroa captain told him at half- ", lime that his team were playing under . 7 ,r °test, because Shannon had outside players. On the referee approaching i the Shannon captain on the matter, the latter made a distinct denial of' having any outside players in the - team, and also stated that the team consisted mostly of third-grade play-

; ers. The letter was received. -PRIMARY SCHOOLS REP. MATCH. Mr. McDonald reported that the representatives of the Wellington primary schools visited Levin en Saturday ". last and were "successful in their match against the Horowhenua schools. The visiting team were given refreshments , on arrival and before leaving. The , day's expenses for the entertaining ' were £4 10s 3d, and the expenses for travelling for trials and practices and " for the match itself amounted to £7 ~ 19s 6d, making a total of £l2 9s 9d. | The Chairman said he thought that ! the money was well spent. The district schoolboys had justified anything that the Union had done for them, and if it had not been for the handicap of a stone between the two teams, he thought the local team would have *'wiped the floor" with the Welling- - ton boys. He moved that the account be passed for payment. The secretary remarked that the ' Council could do too much in the way of paying travelling expenses of train- .' ing teams. Mr. Proctor said that if the Council -could-afford to pay for the seniors, it ,- could afford to pay for the school-boys. y The secretary: I would be in favour -:of that, but you cannot be paying all the time to bring in your footballers. Mr Ryder: I think we should encourage the schoolboys, but this account seems a little bit over the fence. ' We are not giving the third grade a iJiome rep. match ,but are expecting them to go away without a trial game at all. I don't think we should pay for school trial games unless we pay for the same for juniors and thirds too. ■< The Chairman: We told the schools \ye would do everything possible to 'inicoui-ag.j their football. The sum of i£4 10s 3d, for entertaining the Wellington boys is not going above the •"odds. They had to be given a pie ?and a cup of tea when they came off sthe train, and something before they /went back to Wellington. Perhaps Jthere is a little too much to pay for itrials;*but the thirds are in a position ko pay 2s 6d, for a trial match where *the schoolboys are not. It would *&ill on the parents to provide the cost, 'but they are saddled enough with buying books and so forth, and I think wo should give the boys even more than we -give our seniors and juniors. r- The account was passed, and Mr. -McDonald thanked the meeting, stating that the teachers would be very grateful on behalf of the boys. 'j_ OTAKI FINED FOR DEFAULT. 7 Mr. Anderson asked what was the in the competition last Saturday, pointing out that only two senior tteams played —namely, Hui Mai and ■County in the final.. Three matches ;were set down. ',' The Chairman stated that Otaki had ."defaulted to Wanderers, but the Council had not had any notification of the 'fact. , Mr. Anderson: What is the rule in regard to those defaulting without notice ? i The Chairman: They should pay the expenses of the referee. -. The rule on the subject was read at Mr Anderson's rquest. This stated that any club unable to keep its engagement must give notice to the Secretaries of the club, the Council and the Referees' Association, and pay a fine of 5s for each default; such sirm to be remitted if sufficient reason jg given by tha club for the default. '&>

Mr. Rimmer: Are Otaki not entirely out of the competition?

The Chairman: No. Mr. Wrigley: They are still eligible to play. Mr. Rimmer: I was told in Otaki, last Sunday week, that it would be impossible for Otaki to put a senioi team in the finld—that they only had one senior player. The Chairman: It is a pity they don't inform us. It looks as if Otaki will default to Hui Mai again. Mr. Anderson: The teams don't turn up now. We had as much right to put those matches off ourselves. The reason for keeping the club matches go ing was to give the clubs a chance of a game. They did not turn up on Saturday, and are not likely to. It. was resolved that the Otaki club be fined os unless it can give a reasonable excuse for not having given notification of its forfeit.

HUI MAI WINNERS OF SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.

Mr. Ryder sa'id that the Council had agreed that the championship would close if County won on Saturdaylast. As it turned out, Hui Mai was in the lead. He would move that the fixtures be closed. He thought that all the heart was lost from football at present, and that the championship should be awarded to Hui Mai. The Chairman: I don't know whether we can do that.

Mr. Anderson: County will be unable to put in a team next Saturday. We are down and out through injuries in last Saturday's match and through so many rep. players being away. We have four men not able to play. We must default to Wanderers; we cannot do anything else. The Chairman: Even if Otaki played, it would not alter the position. On the motion of Mr. Ryder, seconded by Mr. Rimmer, it was resolved that Hui Mai be declared the winners of the senior championship. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY.

It was decided to go on with the matches set down for next Saturday, as under:- —

County v. Wanderers, at Levin Hui Mai v. Otaki, at Manakau. Weraroa v. Shannon, at Weraroa NASH CUP.

With regard to the Nash Cup contost, the secretary stated that September 10th was the first day without any combined rep. games. On the motion cf Mr. Richards, saconded by Mr. Rim-mt-i» it was decided that the competition be commenced on September 10th. PARAPARAUMU WIN THIRD GRADE.

The secretary moved and Mr. Ryder seconded, that the Paraparaumu club be declared the winners of the thirdgrade champidnship. The Chanman stated that he saw the match last Saturday between Paraparaumu and Wanderers, and it was one of the best matches be had seen this seasonl, representative or otherwise. It was practically the'ease of a good young team against a good old team. The young team covered themselves with glory up to the time that they had to give in to superior weight but Paraparaumu played n great game win . It was worthy of a championship final. A MATURE-TEAM. Mr. Casey: It was food for thought to wat,ch the two teams. Anyone playing for Wanderers could not bo down hearted at playing a game like that. Paraparaumu are a team that, no doubt, should be playing in a grade higher than third, at any rate —grown men coming off hard work, against mere boys. I told Paraparaumu, a week or so before, 'Probably Maori College and Kuku withdrew because you were playing men too big for the other fellows.' We might do something on the lines of an age limit next year. Mr Joyce suggested a weight limit. Mr Wrigley: They are playing out of their class. Mr Anderfon: There were some of them with moustaches. (Laughter). JERSEYS IN VARIETY. Mr Ryder stated that Paraparaumu were - playing in all colours of jerseys. The chairman said that the only way the referee could distinguish between the teams was by Wanderers' black and white stockings. Mr Joyce: We have been fining other clubs throughout he district, and sliQuld be consistent. He moved that a fine be inflicted on the Paraparaumu players who were not in the club's uniform. It was stated that the incorrect jerseys were a black-and-white, a khaki, and a Wellington college jersey. The fine provided by the rules was" 2/6 in respect of each offending player. Mr Richards: Does that apply to seniors and juniors? Mr Ryder: Does it apply to ..third grade?

The Secretary: It applies to all grades. The rules were consulted at Mr Wrigley 's request ,and it Avas found that they stated that all players in cup matches must play in their club colours, otherwise the club is liable to a fine of 2s 6d for each player wrongly attired. It was decided that the Paraparaumu Club be fined 7s 6d. LEAVE GRANTED. Leave of absence was granted to the secretary for one week, and to Mr McDonald for two weeks, from Saturday next. No further meeting of the manage-ment-committee will be held until September 6th, when there will be a meeting, in committee, at 7 p.m., preceding the special general meeting of delegates to the Council, called to consider the relations of this body with the Manawhenua Union, and general business. Mr Robson asked for a luling as to the voting power of the Miranui. Club at the general meeting. He stated that a senior and a junior team were affiliated at che beginning of the season. The senior team fell through, but fees were paid in respect of both teams. The chairman replied that votes were allowed in respect of all affiliation fees paid. If any of the fees were returned to the clubs, the corresponding votes were disallowed.

Mr Robson stated that the Miranui Club's fees were not returned.

I Permission was granted to the Weraroa and Miranui Clubs to play a junior practice match on the Domain on Saturday. September 3rd.
