BEAUTIFYING SHANNON.

Many hard things have been said about Shannon, but the generosity of its citizens when any deserving appeal lias been made lias never been questioned. In every instance they have risen to the occasion splendidly and. an. incident on Wednesday last was no exception. The Beautifying Committee of the Borough Council have been making a footway around one of the plots in Pliminer Terrace and have turned an eyesore of weeds and rubbish into a nice path that will be a pleasure and convenience, but the very small sum of money at their disposal prevented them from completing the kerbing, and the committee felt that the present was not the time to ask assistance from ever-generous-citizens. However, Mr C. C. Franks came forward and offered to donate the whole of the totara blocks wanted, if money could be found to get the timber. A few of the business people were called on, and before evening sufficient money was handed to the Town Clerk to purchase the required material, and the Avork Avill proceed as soon as the timber comes to hand, thus not only making our town more beautiful, but giving work to those who are much in need of it. |

The committee have in view Avork that will cost about £25, and any sum received will be acknowledged in the Shannon News. Shrubs Avould also be appreciated and could be left with the Town Clerk or any of the committee. Any money that is donated Avould carry a subsidy of £1 for £1 from the GoA'ernment, and the Avork Avould be done by local unemployed. The committee consists of Crs. Tlvwaites, Curran, Jontfs and A. E. Hyde, any of Avhom Avill be glad to acknowledge, contributions. The committee desire to thank all those Avho have already contributed.
