MANAWHENUA UNION.

COMMITTEE MEETING IN LEVIN. TARANAKI MATCH TO BE PLAYED IN PALMERSTON. A meeting of the management committee of the Manawhcnua Rugby Union was held in the Wistaria rooms, Levin, there being present— Chairman —Mr A. M. Ongley. Horowhenua delegates—Messrs J. J. O'Connor, T. Robinson, J. Casey, W. N. Anderson, and S. Austin. Manarvatu —Messrs K. Eglinton, J. R. Hardie, J. Colquhoun, and H. Crawford. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs Collins and Fraser (secretary). A telegram was received from the Poverty Bay Union asking for a Ranfurly Shield match with Manawhenua. —lt was decided that as the programme would not admit of it, no match be arranged this season.

COMBINED DISTRICT CONTROL. The Horowhenua Council wrote asking for a special general meeting of delegates to the Union to be called to consider a proposal to alter Rule 8 so that one vice-president shall be elected from the Manawatu delegates and two from the Horowhenua delegates, instead •of one each district at present. Mr Casey moved that a special general meeting of delegates be held to consider the proposal. Mr Anderson seconded the motion. Mr Hardie said that, in view of the arrangement made yvhen the amalgamation was effected, he thought that the suggested alteration would be a breach of faith.

The chairman pointed out that there was power for a special meeting to consider the matter.

Mr Colquhoun moved aiid Mr Crawford seconded, as an amendment, That the matter be deferred till; the next annual meeting of the union. On the casting vote of the chairman the amendment was carried.

DELEGATES’ EXPENSES

Horowhenua also wrote declining to accept any responsibility for the travelling expenses of delegates to the combined Union meetings. The chairman said his opinion had been that in the combined union's expenses as compared with the calls upon the Council's funds, claims in this respect should not be made until the Union was in a stronger -position. For that reason lie had given his casting vote previously against Horowhenua 's request. Mr Casey stated that the Horowhenua Council had been badly hit owing to the combined representative games. The chairman said that the resolution on the Union’s books could be rescinded by notice of motion. At a subsequent stage Mr O’Connor gave notice to move at the next meeting that the existing resolution be rescinded, and that delegates’ expenses between Levin and Palmerston North be paid by the Combined Union, such action to be retrospective to the beginning of the present season. SHIELD CHALLENGES. The Wanganui Union advised that their reps, would arrive in Palmerston from Wairarapa on September Ist, to play Manawhenua on Saturday, September 3rd, and asked that the game be a Ranfurly Shield match. —The Shield challenge was accepted. Taranaki wrote in regard to the proposal from this Union that the match on August 31st should be played at Levin instead of Palmerston. They stated that they desired to adhere to the original arrangement, as the itinerary had been fixed. They asked that the contest be a Shield match. —The request was agreed to. * OTHER MATCHES.

The Canterbury Union asked that accommodation be arranged for their team, which would be arriving at Palmerston from Napier on September stli lo play Manawhenua on Wednesday, September 7th.—This was agreed to. No challenge for the Shield lias yet been received from Canterbury. The Wellington Union wrote confirming August 27th as the date for the match against Manawhenua in Wellington. —Received. THE VICTORY AT CARTERTON. The New Zealand Union confirmed the provisional challenge to Wairarapa for the Ranfurly Shield, depending upon the Hawkes Bay protest being dismissed. * A letter was received from the Wairarapa Rugby Union congratulating Manawhenua on the success of their reps, against Wairarapa, and expressing the hope that the appe'al would be decided shortly and the Shield enter into the possession of Manawhenua, in which case Wairarapa wished this union the best of luck. It was added that the excellent spirit of the game had been favourably commented on in the Wairarapa. —It was decided to thank the Wairarapa Union for their congratulations.

A QUESTION OF INSURANCE. A sum of £1 was voted to Chisholm as compensation for an injured arm, but it was resolved, on Mr O’Connor’s motion, that in future the principle be enforced that no insurance claims be entertained without medical certificates. NORTHERN TOUR, Arrangements were made in connection with the northern tour of the Manawhenua team. The secretary was authorised to engage sleeping berths for the team from Ohakune to Auckland and on the return trip. The chairman remarked that the Union would be £2OO out of pocket at the end of the tour. It was decided to inform the Waikato Union that the match against their representatives must be played at Hamilton. OFFICIAL BADGES. Designs were received for official badges, and it was left to the chairman the secretary and Mr Eglinton to make the selection. JUNIOR REP. GAMES. Mr Casey asked for a decision on the question of the Union not exercising its jurisdiction over junior rep games. The chairman stated that he was prepared to give a ruling, from \yhieh an appeal could be made, but he was not prepared to give it off-hand. Mr Casey moved and Mr Anderson seconded, that this Union apply to the

Wellington Rugby Union for a junior rep. game. The motion was lost. POSSESSION OF THE SHIELD.

Mr Robinson asked, if Manawhenua beat Taranaki and Wanganui, and then lost the Shield to Canterbury, would the latter take it away with them so that it would not actually come into Manawhenua’s possession, seeing that in the meantime it was the subject of an appeal? He said something should be done so that Palmerston and Levin people would be able to see it, and the Man'awhenua j'eps. should be photographed together with the Shield.

The chairman said he had no doubt that if Canterbury won it, Manawhenua could get it back. He believed, however, that it would be in the possession of this Union before they played any further match for it —unless it was awarded to Hawkes Bay. APPRECIATION. On the motion of Mr O’Connor, seconded by Mr Casey, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Messrs Winiata and Ryan (selectors), Mr Robinson (manager) and the players in the Manawhenua team for their success in the provisional match for the Ranfurly Shield.
