RELIGION OF MAORIS.
QUEER MIXTURE, DECLARES BISHOP. AUCKLAND, August 8. In an appeal for prayers, interest and financial help for the Maori mission made at Claudclands on Sunday morning Bishop Cherrington said that only a handful of Maoris here and there in the Waikato diocese were Christians. In England people had the idea that the Maoris were Christians. That idea he had found to be erroneous. The Maoris in the Auckland diocese might be 'Christians, said Bishop Cherrington, but the religion of the Maoris in the Waikato diocese appeared to be a queer mixture of various kinds of isms, superstition and some weird ideas taken .from the Old Testament. rf aoias a grievance against . ® Government, and in some way iden--1 i4i u Governn ient with the church, although the aims and ideals of the two institutions were as wide apart as the poles.
